For breakfast and brunch in New Orleans, Brennan's Restaurant, located in the French Quarter, is the cream of the crop. And dinner there is not too shabby, a romantic experience, with candlelight on your table and lights flickering in the courtyard. The extensive selection of entrees includes fresh seafood, with shrimp, redfish, trout and salmon, prepared in creole tradition. A 35,000 bottle wine cellar will wow you, as in New Orleans, alcoholic beverages are served, and encouraged, every meal of the day. But the first meal of the day is the specialty at Brennan's. Appetizers, yes, for breakfast, include a southern baked apple with double cream, onion or turtle soup, or okra gumbo. Entrees include Oysters Benedict with fried oysters and Canadian bacon, a Crabmeat Omelette, and the nationally popular Eggs Hussarde which is poached eggs atop holland rusks, Canadian bacon and Marchand de Vin sauce, and like almost every egg dish on the menu, topped with hollandaise sauce. A suggested wine is included with each entree. In addition, dessert is offered with every meal, and if you go to Brennan's, whether your apartment is a few miles away or many, you must try the Banana's Foster. Served flaming over ice cream, it's a delicious combination of bananas sauteed in butter, brown sugar, cinnamon and banana liqueur. There's also the chocolate suicide cake if you're feeling daring. Brennan's is not the place for an early morning, as in 3:00 am breakfast snack, for their hours are a modest 9:00 am - 1:00 pm, and dinner is served from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm.
