Paved roads and an electric streetcar could be found within the city limits by the 1920s, and after World War II the region experienced further development and subsequent growth. The 1970s and 1980s saw an increase in nightclubs and bars around the city, affectionately referred to by locales as 'Fat City', and Metairie offers a more 'family-friendly' version of Mardi Gras every February.
