To get around New Orleans from your apartment or workplace, the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA) can probably get you from one place to another via bus or streetcar. The downtown system is quite elaborate, making it easy to get around town, with hundreds of miles servicing nearby parishes and neighborhoods and suburbia. Detailed individual maps of routes are available by viewing www.norta.com. Separate maps of the Central Business District, including the French Quarter can be obtained as well. The fares on the buses are cheap, at $1.25 for a one way ticket, and $.25 for each transfer. If you're going to travel the city from your New Orleans apartment, you can do it with a one day unlimited pass for $5, and a three day pass for $12. A monthly pass is $55. With the wavering price of gas, and if your apartment and where you travel on a daily basis is near convenient stations, this may be the way to go. In addition, if you'd like to ride the bus or streetcar and hop on your bike afterward, you may obtain a bike rack pass for free from RTA headquarters. Senior citizens 65 and over can purchase passes for just $.40 each with free transfers. Travel from New Orleans to the Louis Armstrong International Airport, the Amtrak station and the Cruise Ship Terminal on Julia Street are all available. One of the more fun aspects of RTA is the The St. Charles streetcar line, with recently restored original candy apple red streetcars. Passengers can enjoy passing through uptown New Orleans where Tulane and Loyola Universities, Audubon Park and impressive mansions reside. Streetcar service runs between Canal Street and Carrollton and Claiborne Avenues seven days a week. Cars operate every 10 minutes on weekdays and every 15 minutes on weekends during daytime hours. The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority was created in 1983 by the Louisiana Legislature and was one of the last urban transit systems in the U.S. to be transferred from private to public operation. Operated by New Orleans Public Service (NOPSI) since 1922, NOPSI began to lose money on the system after WWII changed peoples travel resources to less dependence on public transportation. The organization was not eligible for federal funding, and there were little resources for long-term development of a modern urban transit system. In 1979, a buyout of NOPSI began, with plans for improved transit by the state of Louisiana, and in 1983, the RTA was established. Today, it serves a genuine need to move people through New Orleans, and get people to their apartments.
