Raleigh Overview

Streets lined with towering oaks, tons of festivals and events, and great job and educational opportunities make Raleigh a top NC city for renters. Planning a move to the City of Oaks? You’ll be just a few hours away from the ocean to the east and the mountains to the west! But the city itself also has a lot to enjoy. The NC State Fair and other fun events take place here each year. Raleigh’s also part of the Research Triangle, making it a good home for students or anyone who works in higher education. Check out more about why rental homes in Raleigh are in growing demand!

What is the history of Raleigh?

Did you know that Raleigh was built specifically to be NC’s capital city? Way back in 1792, the state created the city as a permanent place for NC government. Named for Sir Walter Raleigh, the city slowly developed in the following years. It grew into a major retail center by the late 1800s, with lots of shopping and special events, like parades and vaudeville. How did it become known for higher education? That started during the mid-1800s. Raleigh was the site of several colleges at this time. But NC State University’s establishment in the late 1800s made it a prime educational center in the state. That reputation continues to attract more and more residents to this day!

How is the weather in Raleigh?

Raleigh’s north enough to get all four seasons. But it’s also south enough to barely get any snow or ice. You’ll get to enjoy beautiful fall foliage and colorful spring flowers! Temps during these seasons are pleasant and mild, with highs in the 60s and 70s. How hot does summer get? Summers can be scorching. Highs are usually in the upper 80s. But humidity can make it feel a bit hotter. With most Raleigh rentals having central air, you can easily escape the heat! Winter temps are typically in the 50s, with some lows in the 30s. Raleigh does get a few inches of rain each month mixed with plenty of sunny days.

How do I get around town?

Having a car gives you an easy way to go wherever you need to around the city. I-40, I-440, I-540, and US-1 are some of the major roads in the area. But public transportation is also an option. There’s GoRaleigh bus service throughout the downtown area. Or you can take the free, eco-friendly R-Line buses, which run in loops around the central part of Raleigh. Attending classes at NC State University? Then you can take Wolfline bus service to get around. The city also has a bikeshare program available. Traveling out of town? Raleigh-Durham International Airport operates multiple flights to destinations within the U.S. and other countries.

What is the Raleigh commute like?

You’ll spend around 23 minutes or so commuting via car. Of course, this can easily vary, depending on what part of the city you live in, where you work, and what roads you take. Morning rush hour falls between 7:30 and 9, while evening rush hour is from 4:30 to 6:30. Which roads are most likely to have tons of traffic? Any of the major roads can make your commute longer. But Glenwood Avenue and I-440 are a couple that tend to be backed up, especially after accidents. Look for Raleigh homes for rent close to your job if you want to cut down on commute times.

Why live in Raleigh, NC?

Looking for a college town? Or a city with amazing job opportunities? Raleigh’s position as part of the Research Triangle makes it an ideal home for education and tech or healthcare jobs. Major employers include Lenovo, IBM, WakeMed Health and Hospital, Cisco Systems, and many more! Raleigh rental homes are easy to find in almost any part of the city. No matter where you live, you’ll be close to exciting events and festivals. There’s the Dreamville Music Festival in spring, summer’s Lazy Daze Arts and Crafts Festival, and so much more!

What Raleigh landmarks should I see?

The city has a bunch of landmarks, from quirky to historical. Head to City Plaza to see the giant copper acorn, a symbol of the City of Oaks. It’s also what Raleigh drops every New Year’s Eve at midnight instead of a ball! Yates Mill County Park features a restored 18th century gristmill and nature trails to explore. NC State has the impressive 115-foot Memorial Belltower. There’s also the NC State Capital building and historic fairgrounds. Looking for something artsy? Visit the NC Museum of Art to see over 5,000 years worth of artistic history. The museum also has over 160 acres of parkland to roam!

What is there to do around Raleigh?

Love nature? Hike along the Neuse River Greenway Trail to see the river, wetlands, and other scenic sights. Or visit Lake Johnson Park to go fishing or boating. Catch a Carolina Hurricanes game at PNC Arena, or take a trolley tour through the grounds of Mordecai Historic Park. Head to the NC Museum of Natural Sciences for natural history exhibits in downtown Raleigh. The city also has several great events in all seasons! Check out the International Festival in fall, the N.C. Hops Festival in summer, and Art in Bloom in spring.

Where is the best place to move in Raleigh?

Think about what you want to live close to or where you’ll be working. Prefer planned communities? That’s what the Village District offers. It’s also near NC State and a shopping center. Stonehenge also has homes for rent in Raleigh that are conveniently close to stores. It’s also a quiet area that’s still close to downtown. Glenwood South is filled with dining, nightlife, art galleries, and more! Five Points has historical homes with easy access to amenities and downtown Raleigh. Of course, you can also look for a place right in the heart of the city to be close to all the action!
