The Smithsonian American Art Museum, SAAM, is the nation's first collection of American Art, and was begun in 1829 with donations from private collections. The Smithsonian was founded in 1849, at which time the art collection was renamed. Artworks in all media, spanning more than 300 years of artistic achievement, are displayed in this lovely museum. The pieces of more than 7,000 American artists is on exhibit at the SAAM, one of the most inclusive collections of American art in the world. The art captures the imagination, the culture and artistic history from artists from the colonial period until today. Some of the major masters displayed in the museum are Georgia O'Keefe, Mary Cassatt, John Singer, Christo and David Hockney. Other collections of note include historic and contemporary folk art; work by African American and Latino artists; photography from its origins in the 19th century to contemporary works; images of western expansion; and realist art from the first half of the 20th century. The building itself is impressive, with an incredible glass canopy above a courtyard (864 panes of glass and no two are alike) that weighs 900 tons over 28,000 square feet. Make sure to step outside and admire its beauty. A cafe is located in the courtyard, where free wireless access is granted. As with all Smithsonian museums, admission is free and SAAM is open every day of the year except for Christmas from 11:30 am to 7:00 pm. This is very convenient for apartment-ites who get off work at 5 pm to go to the museum for a bit of art indulgence. Enjoy!
