Bethlehem Overview

Bethlehem has a population of 75,240. It offers residents a dense urban feel with plenty of parks and restaurants. The town is also known as Christmas City, USA. It was once a major steel-producing community but now the economy is much more diverse, with sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, and technology.

What is the history of Bethlehem?

The city was founded in 1741. Members of the Moravian Church purchased the land and it was christened on Christmas Eve. Music is important to the community and it's home to one of the first orchestras in the country, which was founded here. In the 1820s, the community began to change and the Moravian Church started selling off the property and Bethlehem was incorporated as a borough. The development of railroads spurred further growth.

How is the weather in Bethlehem?

The summers are humid, wet, and warm. The winters are cold and there can be some snowfall. It is partly cloudy year round and fall and spring are generally mild. The temperature can vary between 23 degrees Fahrenheit and 85 degrees. It’s rarely above 93 degrees or below nine degrees.

How do I get around town?

Public transportation is available with the LANTA system. It services the downtown area and also travels to nearby cities, such as Allentown and Easton. The Bethlehem loop transports passengers along the Leigh River. Most residents travel by car and there is close proximity to Interstate 78, Route 22, and Interstate 476.

What is the Bethlehem commute like?

Some people do commute from Bethlehem into bigger cities, such as New York, but that is rare since it is quite a long way. The majority of people drive alone on their commute, with about 9.4 percent carpooling and 3.8 percent using public transportation. About 5 percent of people walk to their job. The average commute time is 23.1 minutes.

What are the local media outlets?

Bethlehem had a newspaper, The Globe-Times, but it stopped publication in 1991. Now The Morning Call and The Express-Times service the area. Smaller newspapers include the Pulse Weekly, Eastern Pennsylvania Business Journal, and the Bethlehem Press. WBPH, a religious broadcaster, is the only television station licensed in Bethlehem. There are two licensed commercial radio stations but numerous other stations also broadcast to the area for a variety of commercial formats.

Why live in Bethlehem, PA?

It’s one of the oldest cities in America so there is plenty of historic buildings and a colonial atmosphere but it’s a city that is not too large or too small. There is still enough of an urban landscape without the high price tag of other cities. There is also no shortage of outdoor activities with so many parks to choose from. There are plenty of local businesses in the city within walking distance. It’s home to one of the country’s best hospitals. It’s been ranked as one of the Best Cities for Teleworking and one of the most comfortable summer cities.

What Bethlehem landmarks should I see?

There are two National Historic Landmarks in the town. The Gemeinhause is the largest 18th-century log structure in continuous use. The Waterworks is America’s first pumped municipal water system. Universities include Moravian College and Lehigh University.

What is there to do around Bethlehem?

There are 40 parks that offer swimming pools, skate parks, dog parks, and golfing. The Moravian Museum of Bethlehem shows the history of the area’s first settlers. The city is packed full of many art galleries, historical buildings, and some of the best restaurants in the Lehigh Valley. Along Third Street, there are different art galleries, boutique shops, and cafes.

Any annual festivals or Bethlehem events to know?

There is always something happening in the town. Christkindlemarkt is a one-of-a-kind event to bring the spirit of Bethlehem alive with the season. This holiday event features aisles of handmade works from more than 150 artisans. Musikfest is the nation’s largest free musical festival with more than 500 performances and 60 different food vendors. Oktoberfest features authentic German food and beer with live music and fun competitions.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

The town lends itself to many different nearby vacation spots, thanks to its close proximity to Philadelphia and New York City. The Poconos are only a short drive if you like to ski or snowboard. A short drive away is also Dorney Park, a water and theme park that has received many accolades over the years. You can travel to the beach at the Jersey Shore within less than two hours. The newly built Sands Casino offers high-end shopping and gambling so you get all the thrills of Las Vegas without even having to leave the region.

Where is the best place to move in Bethlehem?

Bethlehem is divided into four main areas. There is the Center City, West Side, East Side, and South Side. The West Side is located in Lehigh County, while the three others are located in Northampton County. Older homes are east of the downtown area and there are more rural homes further east and north. Nearby Allentown is one of the largest of the cities but it’s also the plainest. However, there is a mix of older homes available for fixing up, newer homes, and apartments. Apartments near public transportation are your best option for easy travel into the larger cities.
