Allentown Overview

Immortalized in the Billy Joel song but offering so much more than just a working class anthem, Allentown apartments represent some of the best living in the entire state of Pennsylvania. The third most populated city in the state, and filled to the brim with exciting amenities as well as plenty of natural splendor, Allentown is a great place to call home.

What is the history of Allentown?

Situated along the scenic Lehigh River, there's a reason why Allentown has been dubbed 'A National Success Story' by Urban Land Institute. Founded in the mid-1700's but not officially incorporated as a city until 1867. A large number of history homes still hold strong in this city that once hid the Liberty Bell from the British, and early industrial development including a silk mill found a foothold in the city in the early 1900's. The city was considered an economic boom town through the 1960's. While the 1970's and 80's saw some economic downturn in the city, Allentown's resilient spirit could not be kept down for long. Today the proud city is home to a number of industries, including warehousing, transport and health care. Redevelopment of the scenic waterfront has also led to an increase in population for Allentown.

How is the weather in Allentown?

Summers tend to be hot and muggy throughout much of Pennsylvania, and Allentown is no exception. Winters can often bring freezing temperatures and snow, while the spring and autumn months tend to be quite comfortable and mild. Average snowfall ranges just under three feet in a typical year, although higher amounts are not unheard of.

How do I get around town?

Public buses run in and around the city with regularity, making it a popular mode of transportation for Allentown apartment residents. Trans-Bridge Lines also runs into New York City, making it ideal for working commuters or those in search of a fun weekend getaway. Rail tends to be light and limited to cargo, although the Lehigh Valley Airport offers flights from a number of carriers direct to Atlanta, Detroit and Chicago. Bicycling is on the rise in popularity around the city, and large sections of Allentown are easily considered walkable, although a majority of residents do claim ownership of at least one car or truck.

What is the Allentown commute like?

A number of major expressways offer easy access to the city, including Interstate 81 and Interstate 78, which runs all the way to the Holland Tunnel in NYC. Route 22 carries into Ohio, while close to ten inbound roads head to Allentown including Fullerton Avenue and Cedar Crest Blvd. The commute tends to be very reasonable on most days, although those commuters making a longer trek into the job market of Philadelphia and beyond can expect the typical gridlock associated with larger cities.

What are the local media outlets?

The Express Times and the Morning Call are the most popular Allentown print news around, although a number of nightlife and art-based monthly magazines can be found with ease as well. Ranking well within the top 70 largest radio markets in the nation, Allentown apartment residents can expect to enjoy a wide array of programming, ranging from oldies to R&B, talk radio to classic rock. The city is also largely considered a part of the Philadelphia broadcast market, with most major affiliates such as NBC and CBS carried locally.

Why live in Allentown, PA?

With a proud tradition of blue collar workmanship and easy small town charm, Allentown is a great mix of city and country. The area forests are a nature lover's dream, with numerous footpaths and wildlife to be found, while the city itself offers a winning mix of nightclubs, restaurants and shopping, making it a cut above smaller locales. Area schools are well-regarded, making the city a great place for families, and the easy commute to Philadelphia and New York yield an ideal location for those eager for a larger job market.

What Allentown landmarks should I see?

History buffs are sure to rejoice in Allentown, as a large number of must-see residences still line the downtown streets including the stately Trout Hall (dating all the way back to 1770!) and the Allentown Symphony Hall. The statues lining West Park date back to the 1920's, and no visit to the city is complete without a tour of the famous Allentown Art Museum. The 19th Street Theater is a perfect demonstration of the art deco architectural flourishes that thrive throughout the city center, and the hiding place of the Liberty Bell is a fascinating stop that will complete any historic weekend tour.

What is there to do around Allentown?

German heritage is proudly on display among the many restaurants in the Allentown vicinity, although cuisine ranging from Japanese to Indian can be found with relative ease. Minor League Baseball makes a home in the area as well, making every weekend a fine one for a ballgame, while the Museum of Indian Culture is a popular destination for families and students. The Da Vinci Science Center is sure to quench your scientific curiosity, and a number of rollercoaster-heavy theme parks are located an easy drive from Allentown apartments for thrill seekers.

Any annual festivals or Allentown events to know?

Allentown is home to a number of annual festivals, including The Great Allentown Fair, which dates all the way back to the late 1800's. The Collegiate Marching Band Festival brings the music to the streets each and ever year, while the Mayfair Festival of the Arts caters to the crafty populace each May.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Centrally-located, Allentown is a great place for those that enjoy a variety of vacation options. Hit the beach and the boardwalk of the Jersey Shore, or take a second honeymoon at the campy yet delightful Poconos Resort Area, both an easy drive. New York City and Broadway are only a short bus ride away, while the natural backdrop of Pennsylvania itself offers plenty of camping, hiking and even boating adventures for the weekend warrior in you.

Where is the best place to move in Allentown?

Allentown offers plenty of neighborhoods for seemingly every budget and lifestyle, from the nightlife-hub of downtown to the South Side area where family homes are the norm. Regardless of where you end up, Allentown is a one-of-a-kind Pennsylvania location well worth considering. Happy hunting!
