Chandler Overview
Chandler, Arizona, is a mid-sized city nestled in the southeast corner of the Phoenix metro region. It's a compact, fairly affluent city that offers the convenience of a smaller city with the access and resources of a larger city given its location in the heavily populated Valley of the Sun.
What is the history of Chandler?
Animal parents will be pleased to hear that Chandler was named after Arizona's first veterinary surgeon, A.J. Chandler, in 1912, who had a master plan for creating a resort and city. Chandler grew quickly, with its core businesses based in cotton and livestock. World War II brought more economic health to the area with the opening of military bases and the influx of troops, and Chandler's population has constantly grown since then.
How is the weather in Chandler?
Needless to say, summers in Chandler are hot. Expect triple-digit heat on a regular basis during summer, with highs in the 90s starting in mid-spring and lasting through mid-fall. Nighttime temperatures are balmy. Late fall, winter, and early spring are fantastic, though, with highs in the relatively moderate 60s and 70s. Lows do occasionally drop below freezing, snow is not really a concern. The North American monsoon in early to mid-summer brings torrential rains, lightning, localized street flooding, and haboobs, those wall-of-dust sandstorms.
How do I get around town?
Chandler apartment residents may want to have a car if they don't already. However, Valley Metro provides bus service across the metro region while also promoting carpooling, it connects Chandler with the rest of the Valley, including Phoenix's light rail and connections to Sky Harbor airport. Chandler also has a municipal airport and is served by three major freeways.
What is the Chandler commute like?
Interstate 10, the SanTan Freeway, and the Price Freeway are the major links for cars in the area. Most car commutes take less than 35 minutes.
What are the local media outlets?
The huge Phoenix metro region has TV and radio for pretty much all tastes. The Arizona Republic is the main newspaper, and all major networks and several independent stations are available, as well as cable services. Spanish-language media is readily available.
Why live in Chandler, AZ?
Chandler is easy to get around in, contains most services that you need in a small area, and has a location that gives you access to urban hotspots, rural zones for hiking and fishing, historical locations for those who want to learn more about the area, and more. It's a friendly city with its eye on renewal and redevelopment, as well as a deep understanding of environmental and growth-management issues.
What Chandler landmarks should I see?
The Arizona Railway Museum is in Chandler, pleasing train buffs of all ages, and the historic San Marcos Hotel, the first hotel opened in the city, is the starting point of a self-guided walking tour. The McCullough-Price House is another landmark, now housing the Visitor Center for Chandler.
What is there to do around Chandler?
The heavily planned nature of Chandler includes parks such as A.J. Chandler Park, across from the San Marcos Hotel. Several man made lakes dot the city, usually as part of housing developments or retail centers. Residents can also go hiking or even horseback riding in San Tan Mountain Regional Park at the southern end of the city, while those who want a less wild version of nature can visit Veteran's Oasis Park.
Any annual festivals or Chandler events to know?
Chandler is home to an annual ostrich festival. Held every March in Tumbleweed Park, this unique festival functions as part county fair and part odd rodeo, with ostrich-powered chariot races as one such event. Petting zoos, rides, food (who can forget fair food?) and more are all available. Chandler residents also have a Christmas tradition of their own: the Tumbleweed Tree, which is a giant, sculpted tree made of tumbleweeds and lit with Christmas lights in a ceremony each year.
Where are the nearby vacation spots?
Chandler's location lets residents access all of the Phoenix metro and Tucson for urban fun, those who wish to venture further north can reach Sedona's New Age calm and the Grand Canyon's majesty, along with the winter snow in the Flagstaff region. Chandler is about 6 hours east of San Diego, offering residents a break from the summer heat, and the city is about 2 and a half hours north of Nogales, Mexico.
Where is the best place to move in Chandler?
Chandler residents can find safe living all over the city, but the Ocotillo East, Trovita/Tuscany, Fulton Ranch, and Circle G Riggs Homestead Ranch rank among the wealthiest areas of the city.
