"Coeur d'Alene came about when French fur traders were establishing fur trading posts in the early 1800s. The phrase refers to the name fur traders used to call the local natives (the Schetsu'umsh people). In French, ""Coeur"" means ""heart"" and ""Alene"" means awl, which was a sharp, pointed tool that was used to pierce through leather. This name referred to the fact that the tribes people were sharp traders with hearts like awls. Until the early 1890s, Coeur d'Alene served as the main transport center for railroad and steamboat transfers running between the mines. "
Summer peaks at its hottest in Coeur d'Alene between July and August, averaging a high of 86ºF. The summers tend to be short, warm, and dry, and they usually offer mostly clear skies. On the contrary, winters can get significantly cold, with the cold season lasting about 3.5 months and ranging in temperatures from lows in the low 20s to highs in the mid 40s, however, in December and January, the average temperature can fall far below the winter average. From Coeur d'Alene's city center to the Spokane airport, it's only about 34 miles. The town of Wallace is only 47 miles away, that's a place where every single building is on the National Register of Historic Places. Seattle's only about a five-hour car ride, which makes it the perfect weekend getaway. You can reach Portland in about six hours, give or take, and you'll have beautiful scenery throughout your drive.
