Coeur d'Alene Overview

For people who love amazing scenery, outdoor recreation, and unlimited ways to enjoy themselves, Coeur d'Alene is calling their names. Thanks to a combination of ski areas in the mountains for winter fun—and a plethora of places to enjoy water sports when summer rolls around—Coeur d'Alene offers something for everyone, particularly adventurous spirits. What is the history of Coeur d'Alene?

"Coeur d'Alene came about when French fur traders were establishing fur trading posts in the early 1800s. The phrase refers to the name fur traders used to call the local natives (the Schetsu'umsh people). In French, ""Coeur"" means ""heart"" and ""Alene"" means awl, which was a sharp, pointed tool that was used to pierce through leather. This name referred to the fact that the tribes people were sharp traders with hearts like awls. Until the early 1890s, Coeur d'Alene served as the main transport center for railroad and steamboat transfers running between the mines. "
