Scottsdale Overview

Scottsdale is a vibrant city that's regularly ranked among the top most desirable cities to call home. Thanks to its close proximity to Arizona's capital city Phoenix, Scottsdale has adopted quite a bustling urban center where art, shopping, dining, and tons of entertainment can be found all year long. Set atop the stunning Sonoran Desert and nestled next to the McDowell Mountains, Scottsdale has something for everybody. Having so much to do and so many great options for Scottsdale apartments available makes life here fantastic!

What is the history of Scottsdale?

"Scottsdale was discovered in 1888 when U.S. Army Chaplain Winfield Scott discovered this Salt River Valley land and saw its potential for a great farming operation. Scottsdale's beginnings as a true Western cattle ranch community solidified the slogan it still bears today as ""The West's Most Western Town."" The town was eventually incorporated in 1951, and since that time, it has grown into a flourishing, vibrant urban center."

How is the weather in Scottsdale?

Thanks to its desert climate, Scottsdale offers its residents moderate temperatures for most of the year, with an average annual temperature ranging from about 60 to 85° F. Summers are notably hot, with temperatures averaging at or above 100° from June through September. Sunshine is abundant in Scottsdale! The city sees about 299 days of sunshine on average each year. Although a rare flurry may appear, the average snowfall is 0 inches.

How do I get around town?

Scottsdale's Downtown Trolley is a free and easy alternative to taxis and Ubers. It operates seven days week throughout the day and will take you all over downtown. Scottsdale is a sprawling city with tons of things to do outside of the city's borders, too, so it's not uncommon for this city's residents to have their own transportation. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is only ten miles from downtown Scottsdale, which makes coming and going a cinch!

What is the Scottsdale commute like?

Residents of Scottsdale enjoy a shorter-than-average commute time, as compared with the rest of the country. The majority of workers travel less than 25 minutes to get to or from work, and less than 1% travels for more than 90 minutes. Like any major city, rush hour can extend the commutes along the major interstates, especially the arteries that connect Scottsdale to Phoenix, but many locals find alternate routes to cut down on congestion.

What are the local media outlets?

Scottsdale Independent is the city's local newspaper, which is published weekly and contains a myriad of information, including events, neighborhood issues, school news, activities, and governmental happenings. This diverse city offers plenty of radio stations to fit its residents' preferences, including the following: KKFR 98.3 -- Hip Hop, KNIX 102.5 -- Country, KALV 101.5 -- Top 40, KSLX 100.7 -- Classic Rock.

Why live in Scottsdale, AZ?

Despite the fact that the Phoenix Metro area, which includes Scottsdale, has grown up as a resort town, Scottsdale is a surprisingly affordable place to live when compared to other cities in the United States. The culture boasts of an interesting combination of Wild, Wild West meets Urban Chic, and the near-perfect weather is happy to welcome people all year long. It's a casual town where folks are friendly and inviting, and there's plenty to do on any given day.

What Scottsdale landmarks should I see?

Mystery Castle is one of those can't-miss places in Scottsdale. It's said to be built by one man who disappeared in 1927, only to be discovered three years later after having single-handedly built this structure from car parts, mortar, and other strange items. Old Town Scottsdale is another great place to visit. It's a chapter right out of the history books and still holds its wild, wild West pride, boasting of a saloon, blacksmith, the Little Red Schoolhouse, and Los Olivos Mexican Patio.

What is there to do around Scottsdale?

Since Phoenix is right next door, you have plenty of major events to keep you occupied. In the fall, you can catch the Arizona Cardinals playing at University of Phoenix Stadium. The Arizona Diamondbacks have the baseball diamond covered in the summer months. The Main Street Arts District is a great place to grab a bite to eat and check out some great art. Stroll along the canal for an outdoors experience that's still inside the city. Old Town Scottsdale is a great place to play that's filled with history from back in the day. Pinnacle Peak Park is a favorite place for picnicking, hiking, and taking in the stunning surrounding scenery.

Any annual festivals or Scottsdale events to know?

Scottsdale's friendly weather allows the city plenty of opportunities to provide entertainment throughout the year. The Scottsdale Fine Art & Chocolate Festival fills the desert air with sweet scents of cocoa while interesting art is on display. The Scottsdale Culinary Festival is another big-deal event that draws huge crowds every year. Para del Sol Parade is the world's largest horse drawn parades, and it's been going strong for over 60 years, still maintaining its Old West style.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Phoenix offers plenty of pricey hotels if you're looking for a luxurious getaway that's right in the heart of the city. If you're looking for a more peaceful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the city, head to the hills! Northeast of Scottsdale, you'll find plenty of resorts and staycation-worthy spots amongst the mountains that will allow you to unwind amidst peaceful scenery.

Where is the best place to move in Scottsdale?

Scottsdale is a diverse city where old meets new, east meets west, and visitors become residents. Downtown is a pedestrian-friendly place that's got a vibrant nightlife with plenty of bars, restaurants, and apartments. Old Town is equally as pedestrian-friendly, but it gives more of a nod to its cowboy roots. If you're searching for a suburban apartment, McCormick Ranch is a planned community, which originally served as an Arabian horse ranch, but now offers plenty of shopping and modern day conveniences. Arcadia is a great option if you're looking for apartments in Scottsdale that are easily accessible to Phoenix, too.
