Tempe Overview
Tempe, Arizona is in the heart of the Phoenix metro valley and has been experiencing exciting growth in recent years. Abundant sunshine, outdoor activities, a lively restaurant and entertainment scene, burgeoning tech economy, proximity to Arizona State University and moderate cost of living all make Tempe a desirable place to live.
What is the history of Tempe?
Farmers moved into the modern-day Tempe area in 1865 and founded a farming settlement by using canals, built by the ancient Hohokam people, to deliver water to their crops. Later a flour mill and ferry were built in the area. These early settlements eventually merged and were named Tempe in 1879. Establishment of the Territorial Normal School (renamed Arizona State University in 1958), the Phoenix and Maricopa Railroad and later the Roosevelt Dam, which guaranteed water to valley farmers, all contributed to the growth of Tempe.
How is the weather in Tempe?
Tempe experiences a desert climate with very hot summers, mild winters and little rainfall (less than 10 inches annually). The average temperature during the months of May through September is 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. The coolest month of the year is December when the average high is 68 degrees Fahrenheit and the average low is 38 degrees Fahrenheit. Two interesting weather phenomenon affect the area: spontaneous dust storms called haboobs and a summer and winter monsoon season when rainstorms are more common.
How do I get around town?
Tempe has many transportation options. While many residents own cars, access to light rail, bus and car sharing services make it possible to live in Tempe without one. Many apartments in Tempe are located near light rail stops in addition to being walking or biking distance from restaurants, shopping and the university. In addition, Tempe is a bike-friendly city and boasts 175 miles of bike lanes along city streets and canals that crisscross the metro area. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is located nearby and is easily accessible.
What is the Tempe commute like?
Tempe residents have easy access to several major highways that provide connections throughout the Phoenix metro valley as well as to other cities and states. I-10, U.S. Route 60 and Loop 202 provide east-west access and Loop 101 provides north-south access. In addition to being multi-lane and divided, most highways have an HOV lane available for carpooling.
What are the local media outlets?
The daily Arizona Republic newspaper and the weekly Phoenix New Times newspaper serve the metro area including Tempe. Popular radio stations in the area include KJZZ 91.5 for National Public Radio as well as jazz and blues, KWSS 93.9 for alternative rock, KOOL 94.5 for oldies, KSLX 100.7 for classic rock, The Beat 101.1 for R&B and hip-hop and KNIX 102.5 for country.
Why live in Tempe, AZ?
Tempe is a vibrant city that is home to one of the largest U.S. universities and offers something for everyone - from sports fans to outdoor enthusiasts to foodies and life-long learners. The city embodies a resilient and progressive spirit and is quickly attracting new residents, businesses and amenities. Choosing to live in a Tempe apartment also has the added benefit of being located close to the cities of Phoenix, Scottsdale and Mesa.
What Tempe landmarks should I see?

A Mountain is a well-known landmark as is Tempe Town Lake. Historic Hayden Flour Mill on Mill Avenue offers a glimpse at Tempe’s past.
What is there to do around Tempe?
The Mill Avenue district is a popular destination for restaurants, bars and entertainment as is nearby Tempe Marketplace. Tempe Town Lake is a popular place to hang out and many festivals and events are held at Tempe Beach Park and at the Tempe Center for the Arts. Tourists are attracted in the winter months by the mild climate and opportunities for golfing and other outdoor activities.
Any annual festivals or Tempe events to know?
Tempe’s mild climate makes it a great place for festivals. The bi-annual Tempe Festival of the Arts attracts arts and crafts vendors and thousands of attendees. Oktoberfest is an annual beer festival sponsored by Tempe’s Four Peaks Brewery. New Belgium Brewing’s Tour de Fat features a bicycle parade and beer festival, and popular musicians perform at the annual Summer Ends Music festival.
Where are the nearby vacation spots?
There are numerous destinations to explore beyond the Tempe metro area. The cities of Sedona, Prescott and Flagstaff to the north and Tucson to the south are each reachable within about a two-hour drive and offer opportunities for cultural events, outdoor activities, dining and tourism. The Grand Canyon National Park is located north of Flagstaff. Popular weekend destinations beyond Arizona include Las Vegas, Nevada and southern California, so there is plenty of adventure to get out of your Tempe apartments and enjoy.
Where is the best place to move in Tempe?
Apartments in Tempe are available in all price ranges and with minimal to luxury amenities. Apartments in north Tempe along Tempe Town Lake tend to be newer, offer more amenities and are near Scottsdale and Phoenix. Living near the Arizona State University campus offers close proximity to dining, night life and light rail access and is popular with students.
