Weymouth Overview

The city of Weymouth is an old fishing town first settled by Europeans in the 1620s. It offers weather that experiences all four seasons, beaches, nature, and plenty of amenities to residents. The public transportation network is substantial, and it's easy to head into the city of Boston for work or entertainment. You can find affordable housing in Weymouth and commute into the city of Boston for work.

What is the history of Weymouth?

Weymouth is the second oldest town in Massachusetts, and a southern suburb of Boston. Native Americans were in Weymouth before English settlers came to the area in the 1620s. By 1850, the population of the city was 5,221. The population is now close to 60,000, and there are many historical buildings throughout the city. It was incorporated in 1635, and was named for Weymouth, England. It was once a major fishing and agricultural city, while the shoe industry was the main industry in the 1900s. It is now an eclectic place that relies on the unique local businesses in the area.

How is the weather in Weymouth?

The weather in Weymouth gives residents all four seasons throughout the year. You can expect cold, snowy winters with freezing temperatures. Average highs in February are 40 F, with a low of 22 F. Summer hovers around 80 F for a high, as it is on the coast of Massachusetts. Lows in the summer dip to about 55 F. It rains or snows consistently in the area, with wet weather seen about 8 days out of any given month. You will experience cool, crisp falls, and wet, muddy spring in the City of Weymouth.

How do I get around town?

The MBTA bus and subway system are accessible if you live in apartments in Weymouth. You can go to the Route 128 MBTA station to access the green line to get into downtown Boston. The area also has MBTA bus routes in order to expand the subway system and provide access throughout Weymouth. There is an extensive network of cabs to use in the area, and Logan Airport is the closest international airport to the area.

What is the Weymouth commute like?

Route 93 North will take you into the city of Boston, but this commute gets congested during commuter hours. It is often easier to take the T into the city to avoid traffic. Route 3 will get you from Weymouth onto Route 93 North. You can also take the more scenic route 3A. If you work in the city, chances are high that you will avoid driving on the road and take a commuter train instead.

What are the local media outlets?

The Boston Globe is a major newspaper serving Weymouth residents. Some popular radio stations include WROR 105.7 FM, playing classic hits, WBOS 92.9 FM out of Dorchester playing classic rock, and WBQT, 96.9 FM out of Boston playing urban contemporary. There are many other radio stations to check out in the area offering a wide range of listening options. WGBH, Channel 2 is a local educational television station. WBZ Channel 4 is the local CBS, WCVB Channel 5 is the ABC station, while Channel 8 is WBTS-LD, the NBC station.
