Weymouth Overview

The city of Weymouth is an old fishing town first settled by Europeans in the 1620s. It offers weather that experiences all four seasons, beaches, nature, and plenty of amenities to residents. The public transportation network is substantial, and it's easy to head into the city of Boston for work or entertainment. You can find affordable housing in Weymouth and commute into the city of Boston for work.

What is the history of Weymouth?

Weymouth is the second oldest town in Massachusetts, and a southern suburb of Boston. Native Americans were in Weymouth before English settlers came to the area in the 1620s. By 1850, the population of the city was 5,221. The population is now close to 60,000, and there are many historical buildings throughout the city. It was incorporated in 1635, and was named for Weymouth, England. It was once a major fishing and agricultural city, while the shoe industry was the main industry in the 1900s. It is now an eclectic place that relies on the unique local businesses in the area.

How is the weather in Weymouth?

The weather in Weymouth gives residents all four seasons throughout the year. You can expect cold, snowy winters with freezing temperatures. Average highs in February are 40 F, with a low of 22 F. Summer hovers around 80 F for a high, as it is on the coast of Massachusetts. Lows in the summer dip to about 55 F. It rains or snows consistently in the area, with wet weather seen about 8 days out of any given month. You will experience cool, crisp falls, and wet, muddy spring in the City of Weymouth.

How do I get around town?

The MBTA bus and subway system are accessible if you live in apartments in Weymouth. You can go to the Route 128 MBTA station to access the green line to get into downtown Boston. The area also has MBTA bus routes in order to expand the subway system and provide access throughout Weymouth. There is an extensive network of cabs to use in the area, and Logan Airport is the closest international airport to the area.

What is the Weymouth commute like?

Route 93 North will take you into the city of Boston, but this commute gets congested during commuter hours. It is often easier to take the T into the city to avoid traffic. Route 3 will get you from Weymouth onto Route 93 North. You can also take the more scenic route 3A. If you work in the city, chances are high that you will avoid driving on the road and take a commuter train instead.

What are the local media outlets?

The Boston Globe is a major newspaper serving Weymouth residents. Some popular radio stations include WROR 105.7 FM, playing classic hits, WBOS 92.9 FM out of Dorchester playing classic rock, and WBQT, 96.9 FM out of Boston playing urban contemporary. There are many other radio stations to check out in the area offering a wide range of listening options. WGBH, Channel 2 is a local educational television station. WBZ Channel 4 is the local CBS, WCVB Channel 5 is the ABC station, while Channel 8 is WBTS-LD, the NBC station.

Why live in Weymouth, MA?

The city of Weymouth gives residents a sense of belonging to a small community, with the amenities of living close to a city. You experience all four seasons here, and there is plenty for people who live in apartments to do. It's close to Boston, but also close to area parks where you can get out and enjoy nature. If you are a sports fan, the area is home to the Boston Bruins, the Boston Red Sox, and the New England Patriots are close by. From museums, to great restaurants and more, it's always simple to find something to do in the area.

What Weymouth landmarks should I see?

Webb State Park is a popular landmark to visit with a view of Boston Harbor. You can go fishing, take a walk, or have a picnic. The Abigail Adams birthplace is a home still standing in Weymouth. She was the mother of President John Quincy Adams, and wife of President John Adams. There are many historical building to visit in Weymouth, including the Joseph Dyer Oddfellow's building, Harold B. Klingman Square, and First Parish, Old Ship Church. Fort Revere Park is another fun place to visit and learn about the area history.

What is there to do around Weymouth?

Whether you love shore fishing, sitting on a beach, going for a hike, or the excitement of a city, Weymouth has many adventures to offer you. Spend some time learning about area history at the Adams' Old House, or head into Boston for the day for a duck tour. You can also hop on a ferry and head to Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket for the day or weekend. Weymouth and the surrounding area are full of good restaurants, sporting events, concerts, and excitement.

Any annual festivals or Weymouth events to know?

If you live in an apartment in Weymouth and looking to have some fun, try the annual St. Patrick's Day bar crawl in the spring, or the July 4th Sailabration with the Boston Pops and fireworks held each year. There are local farmers markets in Weymouth, as well as right in Boston. There is a Mayflower Marketplace held in December. With so many activities going on throughout the year, it's always possible to find a local craft show, flea market, or outdoor vendor event.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Many people who live in Weymouth like to head to Cape Cod for vacation opportunities. Whether you love the artsy atmosphere of Provincetown, to the quieter area of Eastham, you can find plenty to do on the Cape. Some travel to Maine to spend time on the coast, heading all the way up to Arcadia National Park to check out the amazing views. If you prefer camping on a lake, New Hampshire and Vermont offer all types of opportunities. Some travel a few hours to New York City to take in a Broadway Show and enjoy the sites.

Where is the best place to move in Weymouth?

Weymouth is considered a safe place to live, and those that live in apartments in the area find plenty of local amenities to enjoy. The southwest part of Weymouth is considered the safest by residents who live there, while the southeast is a bit more troublesome. You can locate an excellent living opportunity in Weymouth when you take your time and do some research.
