What is the history of Bakersfield?

During the California Gold Rush, many traveled to the area to seek out wealth. One such man was Thomas Baker, a lawyer and former colonel in the Ohio militia. Baker moved to the area in 1863, and it became known as Baker's Field. By 1870, it became the principal town in Kern County, and Bakersfield was officially incorporated as a city in 1873.

How is the weather in Bakersfield?

The Bakersfield climate is very dry. It only receives about 6 inches of rain per year. The summers can get very hot and humid with temperatures reaching the 90s, on average. The winter months are quite mild with highs in the 50s.

How do I get around town?

Like most cities in California, it is almost a necessity to own a car. If you must, mass transit is available. Bakersfield is served by Golden Empire Transit and Kern Transit, which provide routes around urbanized parts of the county. There is also an Amtrak station in downtown for train service out of the city. The closest airport is the Meadows Field Airport, which was recently rebuilt and dedicated as the William M. Thomas Terminal.

Bakersfield has three main freeways: State Route 99 (bisects Bakersfield from north to south), State Route 58 (southeast Bakersfield and extending over the Tehachapi mountains), and State Route 178 (runs from downtown to northeastern part Bakersfield). Interstate 5 is a fast north-south superhighway that runs past the city a few miles to the west. Since Bakersfield is not a bustling metropolis, the average commute and traffic issues are not too bad.

Close by, the Kern River offers a number of whitewater experiences for every level of rafter. Bakersfield is fairly close to any number of fun cities for a mini vacation. It’s only about 2-3 hours from Sequoia National Park, or Santa Barbara, or even Los Angeles. If you’re feeling ambitious and looking for a wild weekend, Las Vegas is only about 4 hours away.

Where is the best place to move in Bakersfield?

One of the best spots to look for apartments in Bakersfield is Downtown. It has become the epicenter of arts and culture, as well as business and entertainment. There are a number of historical landmarks and wonderful sense of community. Mills Creek is another area to keep an eye on. It is fairly new, and there are plans for a park which will be bordered by the Kern Island Canal. Just west of Downtown is Westchester. It is mainly a residential neighborhood. Though, this is where the Kern County Museum is located. It is a gorgeous spot with large homes and trees lining the streets.
