The town was named El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de Los Angeles de Porcincula, meaning “Our Lady the Queen of the angels of Porcincula”. L.A. became part of United States in 1847 after being captured by US forces. At first, there were a handful of families in the town but the discovery of oil in 1892 massively fueled the growth of the city.
