Write a ReviewThere is a good reason US News, World Report, among others have rated Colorado Springs as one of the best places to live in the US. With an abundance of outdoor activities and booming city life, it is no wonder people want to call this place home. And the apartments in Colorado Springs reflect this great city’s beautiful scenery.
Colorado Springs, part of the Louisiana Purchase, had a brief stint as the capital of Colorado before it was moved to Denver. People and businesses were drawn to the town because of the nearby Pikes Peak Gold Rush in the late 1800s. During and after World War II, the military built a presence in Colorado Springs. In 1950, the city’s Ent Airforce Base was chosen as cold war headquarters for its Air Defense Command. Later NORAD and ADCOM’s headquarters were established here.
Located east of the Rocky Mountains, Colorado Springs averages 243 days of sunshine each year. The winters are mild to moderately cold with around 38 inches of snow each season. March usually sees the heaviest amount of snow. Summers are pleasant and warm. July’s average temperature is 70.9 degrees. Due to its high elevation, summer evenings are cool. The city is typically dry, but occasional storms can occur in July and August. Spring and fall are both very pleasant seasons with moderate temperatures and plenty of sunshine.
Colorado Springs offers a variety of choices for those wanting to get around town. There are trails for walking, especially downtown, and it has one of the fastest growing networks of bike paths and lanes in the country. You can also easily get around town in your car. For those wanting to take advantage of public transportation, the Mountain Metro Transit (MMT) system is available. It services the Pikes Peak region by providing over 11,000 one-way trips each day. The city also offers a grant-funded program called Mountain Metro Rides. This program provides resources such as bicycle commuting tips, carpool matching, and a low-cost vanpool program.
Two major interstate highways run through the city. I-25, which runs north and south through Colorado, and US 24, which runs east and west connecting the central mountains to the plains. The average commute time in the city is 23.1 minutes with 80% of the population commuting alone in their cars. For those needing to commute to Denver from Colorado Springs, there are alternatives to driving alone such as carpools and vanpools.
Colorado Springs has all the major television networks including ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, and Fox . It is considered the 90th largest media market in the US and has numerous other local broadcast stations. The largest circulation newspaper is The Gazette and there are also five smaller regional and special interest papers. The city carries numerous AM and FM radio stations and also has 22 digital HD Radio channels.
There are many reasons to want to live in Colorado Springs. First of all, the weather is beautiful and sunny for most of the year. If you enjoy getting outside, this is the place you want to be. You can live fairly close to major ski resorts without the high cost of living associated with them. And the skyline is beautiful with its view of the majestic Rockies. There are also some very practical reasons to love this city including low unemployment and lower than average commute time. In fact, US News recently ranked it as the #5 best place to live based on its quality of life and job market.
Colorado Springs is located at the base of Pikes Peak Mountain, a popular tourist destination. It is also home to the national natural landmark, Garden of the Gods. The city has also been nicknamed “Olympic City” because it is the headquarters of the United States Olympic Committee and the United States Olympic Training Center. More than 10 universities and colleges call Colorado Springs home. These include the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS) and the United States Airforce Academy. In addition to the Airforce Academy, five military bases are located here
Whatever your interests may be, there is so much to do in Colorado Springs. You will never run out of hiking or mountain biking trails with places such as Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods close by. You can visit nearby Manitou Springs for a fun day of shopping at art galleries and funky boutiques. Or for a taste of the “Wild West” check out Colorado City, just west of downtown.
The Colorado Springs Balloon Classic is the biggest and longest continually running hot air balloon in the Rocky Mountains. It happens each year in late August and early September with over one hundred hot-air balloons participating. Nearby Manitou Springs is the home to the Pikes Peak Marathon, which is considered to be one of the most difficult and challenging marathons in the US.
This is a great place to live if you enjoy winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding. Popular ski resorts such as Breckenridge and Aspen are only a few hours away. Activities such as hiking can be enjoyed in the summer and fall at these resorts. If you prefer whitewater rafting, there are several outfitters less than an hour away.
No matter your lifestyle, it is easy to find apartments in Colorado Springs to suit you. For a great view of the city lights, you'll want the southwest side of town. Or to be close to work and shopping, look for an apartment in the downtown area. The northeast side of town is ideal for those needing to be close to a military base. And for an eclectic mix of neighbors, check out the west side. There are plenty of Colorado Springs apartments for every taste and style.
