Colorado Springs Overview

Rental homes in Colorado Springs offer all the advantages of living in the Centennial State but without the higher cost of living of Denver. The city is right next to the majestic Rocky Mountains and features some of the best skiing and winter sports in the country. Colorado Springs is consistently rated as one of the best cities in America to live in, due to the abundant opportunities for families and retirees. The economy is centered around tourism, defense, and high-tech manufacturing, so the city tends to have high salaries for working professionals and offers a great quality of life.

What is the history of Colorado Springs?

The area around Colorado Springs was included in the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, but the first American settlers didn't arrive until 1859. So many settlers from England had come to the area by the 1870s that locals called it "Little London." Colorado Springs wasn't officially incorporated as a city until 1872. The US Army Air Forces built up a large presence here during and after World War II. Peterson Space Force Base is still the headquarters of NORAD, which was established here in the late 1950s. Three colleges and universities were established in Colorado Springs in the 1960s, and the city was where the Libertarian Party was birthed in the 1970s.

How is the weather in Colorado Springs?

Everyone asks about the weather when they're considering moving to Colorado Springs rental homes. Most of the snowfall happens in the mountains directly to the west of the city. Colorado Springs only gets around 38 inches of snow each winter. It does get cold, however, with several nights each winter reaching sub-zero temperatures. The city receives around 300 days of sunlight each year, so snow doesn't stick around very long without melting. Average high temperatures in the summer are around 70 degrees, although the city does see days with 90-degree heat in July. The summers are dry, but afternoon thunderstorms are common.

How do I get around town?

Colorado Springs is ranked as the 34th most walkable big city in America, although most people own a personal vehicle due to the chilly winters. Around 3 million people also take rides on Metropolitan Mountain Transit (MMT), the city bus service, each year. A fleet of 45 buses covers 27 routes in Colorado Springs from five different transit centers. There is no inter-city train service that originates from Colorado Springs. Colorado Springs Airport is the second-largest airport in the state after Denver International. It serves more than 2 million passengers annually through six different airlines.

What is the Colorado Springs commute like?

Colorado Springs does experience rush hour traffic in the mornings and late afternoons. Almost a third of the city's residents commute between 6:30 and 8:30 a.m. The average speed on freeways during the morning rush hour is about 34 miles per hour, and 27 mph during the afternoon rush. Interstate 25, the most important north-south freeway through the city, gets especially congested at exits and on-ramps during peak traffic times. I-25 and Powers Boulevard are the two main north-south streets running through the city. The main east-west streets to familiarize yourself with are Fountain Boulevard and Woodmen Road.

Why live in Colorado Springs, CO?

Colorado Springs offers the perfect balance between stunning natural beauty and vibrant urban living. Outdoor activities are endless, while cultural and entertainment options are abundant. The city is only a little over an hour away from Denver, which opens up the possibility for even more events and activities. It has a strong job market because of its military and defense ties. The schools are considered some of the best in Colorado. The city is also a great place for retirees due to the cost of living, senior opportunities, and other factors. Colorado Springs offers a quality of life that people just can't find in many other comparably sized cities.

What Colorado Springs landmarks should I see?

Whether you take a bus tour or drive a personal car, the Garden of the Gods park is a must-see landmark directly to the west of Colorado Springs. The 1,300-acre park offers plenty of hiking trails, a visitor center, and some of the best outdoor views in the state. The Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site is another landmark worth visiting. It has interpretive guides and offers a glimpse of pre-20th-century farming in America. The Pikes Peak Railway is another way to get an up-close look at the Garden of the Gods and the mountain that is the railway's namesake.

What is there to do around Colorado Springs?

Companies that offer zip-line tours through the mountains and parks near Colorado Springs are extremely popular. History buffs will love a trip to the National Museum of World War II Aviation. The city's extreme elevation makes it the perfect place for the US Olympic and Paralympic Training Center, which visitors are welcome to tour. You might spot a current or future Olympian working out! The Manitou Cliff Dwellings are an amazing archaeological site that dates back many centuries. The city is also home to the ProRodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy.

Where is the best place to move in Colorado Springs?

Broadmoor, Stratton Meadows, and Stratmoor are south of the downtown area and offer quick access for contractors and military families at Fort Carson. Cimarron Hills is a newer and slightly more upscale neighborhood to the east of the city center. The suburbs of Briargate, Northgate, and Gleneagle are north of Downtown Colorado Springs, and close to the US Air Force Academy.
