Far Rockaway Overview
Far Rockaway is a neighborhood of Queens, which is a borough of New York City. Far Rockaway is located on the eastern end of a peninsula known as the Rockaways. Other neighborhoods on this peninsula include Edgemere, Arverne, Hammels, Rockaway Beach, Rockaway Park, Belle Harbor, Neponsit, and more. The entire peninsula is home to about 120,000 people across 11 square miles, but Far Rockaway itself has about 70,000 residents in just under three square miles. It's a great place to work, live, and raise a family while still enjoying a small town feel near the big city.
What is the history of Far Rockaway?
The peninsula now known as the Rockaways was first home to the indigenous Canarsie Indians until 1639 when they sold a majority of the land to Dutch West India Company. In 1664, the English defeated the Dutch and took over the land. In 1685, the Canarsie Indian chief and the English governor sold the Rockaways to Captain Palmer. The peninsula was originally part of the Town of Hempstead, however Hempstead and Palmer could not agree on who owned the land. In 1687, Palmer sold it to Richard Cornell who lived there with his family on a homestead that is now Central Avenue. Over the next 200 years, the Rockaways saw growth due to the building of a hotel and addition of a steam-powered ferry and the Long Island Rail Road. Far Rockaway was incorporated as a village in 1888, and was incorporated into the Greater City of New York in 1898.
