Topeka became a recognized city in 1857. The name actually means a good place to dig potatoes. It was in 1840 that wagon trains made their way to the area as there was a way to cross the Kansas River there. In the early 1900's the automobile industry came to town, but like other cities, at the time, it didn't last long.

You can expect typical Midwestern weather in Topeka with an average high of 37 degrees in January and an average of 89 degrees in July. In a normal year, there is about 37 inches of rain and 17 inches of snow.

How do I get around town?

There are two major interstates that cross Topeka, the I-335, and I-70. This makes it easy to get to the city and out of it in all directions. You'll find an international airport, Kansas City International Airport, about an hour's drive away. In addition, Amtrak services the area. In town, there is a bus service, Topeka Metro.

What is the Topeka commute like?

For most, the commute time in Topeka falls in the fifteen to the thirty-minute range. The main interstate is I-70, but there is also a bypass, I-470 that takes you around the city and normally has less traffic than roads directly in the city center.

If you're a music lover, there are numerous radio stations to listen to. These include KTJO - Alternative, KQRC - Rock, KVOE - Country, and KMAJ - Adult Contemporary. For news junkies, you can pick up one of three local papers, the Capital-Journal Press Room, the Topeka Capital-Journal, and the Topeka Metro News.

Not to mention there are four major trails in town that include twenty miles of bike trails as well.

What Topeka landmarks should I see?

As Topeka is the capital of Kansas, one of the best landmarks is the Kansas State Capitol building. There is also the Brown v Board of Education National Historic Site for history lovers. Speaking of history, the Ward Meade park is a great old prairie town. Finally, don't forget to check out the historic home, Cedar Crest.

What is there to do around Topeka?

If you're looking for outdoor activities, Lake Shawnee is a great place to start. Inside activities should include a visit to the Kansas Museum of History as well as the Mulvane Art Museum. The kids can have a day of fun at the Kansas Children's Discovery Center, and Gage Park is a wonderful destination for the whole family.

Any annual festivals or Topeka events to know?

There are dozens of annual festivals in Topeka. These include the Huff 'n Puff Hot Air Balloon Festival in September, the Apple Festival in October, and the Winter Wonderland in November and December. In April you can enjoy Tulip Time and the Sunflower Music Festival in June.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

When it is time to hit the road, there are several great vacation opportunities near Topeka. For hiking enthusiasts, there is the Elephant State Park and Onondaga State Park which also has caves to explore. For a nice bed and breakfast and wine, head to Hermann, MO.

Where is the best place to move in Topeka?

There are many nice areas in and around when you are looking for apartments in Topeka. The West side of Topeka has good schools and is a great place to raise a family. The Seaman district in the north part of the city is another area that is good for families with children. South Topeka is known for its quiet atmosphere and country feel which is great for those looking at Topeka apartments but don't want the hustle and bustle of downtown living.
