West Haven Overview

With its scenic coastal views, small town aesthetic, and quick access to New York, West Haven, Connecticut, definitely seems to have it all. Sweetening the deal are the university jobs and other excellent career opportunities in its midst. Plus, the local restaurants, shopping centers, parklands, and beaches make it easy to truly enjoy your downtime on your days off work. So, if you’re looking for a great place to live, you cannot go wrong by setting your sights on spacious apartments in West Haven.

What is the history of West Haven?

First known as West Farms in the 1600s, West Haven has long served as an idyllic place to settle down and enjoy coastal life. When the British invaded New Haven Harbor during the American Revolution, the resulting chaos left the region with serious growing pains until the 1900s. After much strife, this historic settlement incorporated as its own city, becoming well-known as “Connecticut’s Youngest City.” The historic buildings and neighborhoods tell the real tale, while still leaving room for continued growth and change. During that process, developers erected many beautiful West Haven apartments to meet the demand for quality rentals.

How is the weather in West Haven?

Since it’s a coastal town, living in West Haven apartments treats you to more than your fair share of rainfall. In fact, each year brings about 48 inches of rain, which is 10 inches more than the national average. Despite the increased rainfall, the sun shines brightly more often than not, just surpassing the average at 208 days per year. In the summer, expect balmy temps in the 80s, setting the stage for beachside fun. Through the fall, the temperatures decrease from the 70s to the 50s. Wintertime brings freezing cold temperatures and about 29 inches of snow each year. Spring mimics fall in reverse, going from the 50s to the 70s with the quickness.

How do I get around town?

Parking is plentiful while residing in apartments in West Haven, so traveling by car serves as the most convenient transportation option. Most businesses have their own lots or at least offer street side parking to their patrons. If you prefer to leave the driving to the professionals, you can call for a cab or rideshare driver to come pick you up. The Greater New Haven Transit District bus system starts running early in the morning and cycles through their stops well into the night, making that an excellent choice as well. For longer distance rides, including into New York City, go to the Metro-North Railroad commuter station.

What is the West Haven commute like?

West Haven apartments put you in range of all the best scenic backroads and major thoroughfares in Connecticut. Cruising along the gorgeous shoreline is as easy as taking a jaunt down Beach Street to Ocean Avenue. In between, you’ll land on Captain Thomas Boulevard where you can get lunch and take a walk through Savin Rock Park. For a trip out of town, just hop on the Connecticut Turnpike, which you can follow all the way down to New York. If you want to land in the heart of Connecticut, take the I-91 instead to easily travel to Hartford and beyond.

What are the local media outlets?

When you want to learn what’s going on around your West Haven apartments, you can just tune into WFSB or WTNH. Both stations have websites as well if you prefer to get your news online. As for print media, you can have the West Haven Voice delivered to your doorstop or just go on their website at your leisure. The most popular local radio stations include WDRC, WMRQ, WHCN, and W288DV.

Why live in West Haven, CT?

If you decide to live in West Haven apartments, you get a home with a quiet, suburban feel while residing just an hour’s drive from New York. Opportunities for weekend trips into the Big Apple abound as a result. When you’d like to get out of the house while staying close to home, the miles of ocean beaches serve as a great place to go for a day trip. You also have your choice of beautiful greenspaces inland, including Painter Park with its sports courts, walking paths and ice skating rink. Whenever you’d like to go shopping and eat at local restaurants, just head over to Campbell Avenue, Kimberly Avenue, or Saw Mill Road.

What West Haven landmarks should I see?

As one of Connecticut’s oldest settlements, West Haven has many gorgeous historical places in its confines. On Main Street, you’ll find Old West Haven High School, while the Union School sits on Center Street. Other notable historical sites include the Ward-Heitman House and American Mills Web Shop. For a glimpse back in time, you can also visit the West Haven Green Historic District featuring the Congregational Church and many other historic buildings along Campbell and Main Street. Within that space, you can view monuments built in honor of war heroes and fire fighters. There’s also a stone chess table, bandstand, and cemetery to explore.

What is there to do around West Haven?

Although the beaches definitely get the most attention, there are many other fun things to do near your West Haven apartments. For a chill walk along the boardwalk, just go to Savin Park, and then continue to Bradley Point Park or go on over to Oak Street Beach. If you want to enjoy a glimpse of gothic architecture and visit an art museum stocked with works from up-and-coming artists, plan a trip to Yale University. Other places to have a great time include the IT Adventure Ropes Course, Monster Mini Golf, PEZ Visitor Center. When you want to get far out of town, New York is just a short jaunt away.

Any annual festivals or West Haven events to know?

With so many miles of beaches and parklands all around, you can bet that fun festivals will happen all around your apartments in West Haven. Although the festivals happen year-round, the summer months tend to have special events happening each and every week. Popular events to attend as the weather heats up include the Midsummer Fantasy Renaissance Faire, Fun and Food Fest CT, and Centennial Savin Rock Fair. Soon after that, the North Haven Fair arrives at the fairgrounds, treating everyone to delicious grub and fun attractions. Other popular events include autumn arts and crafts festivals, annual holiday festivals, and the St. Patrick’s Day parade.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

New York City definitely serves as the number one vacation spot near your West Haven apartments. With the train running straight into the city, it’s easy to get there without having to worry about parking, flying, and the like. If you’d like to take a quiet trip out of town, just head northwest to the Webb Mountain campsites. While there, you can go hiking, fishing, and picnicking to your heart’s content. Prefer to camp along the coast? Travel east along the shoreline to the Riverdale Farm Campsite for adventures to remember. To spend the day at a theme park, you have to travel north to the Quassy Amusement and Waterpark.

Where is the best place to move in West Haven?

When looking for West Haven apartments, you’ll likely find yourself in the downtown area more often than not. Their central location makes it easy to live without a car if you’d like as it’s highly walkable, bikeable, and has instant access to public transportation. The price goes up as you get closer to the water, although it’s often well worth the incredible views and close proximity to the beach. Apartments located north of Boston Post Road have a quieter atmosphere, but not quite as many opportunities for downtown fun and beachside adventures.
