For many that move into an Austin apartment, the situation is remarkably similar - you locate the apartment of your dreams, settle in at your new job, get your head around the layout of the city, and hit the notorious 6th Street nightlife up every weekend. This lasts about two months until you actually start to become a legitimate Austinite and inevitably find one Friday evening that your romance with the downtown scene has waned. You still want to go out, but the thought of fighting the crowded, cramped bars leaves you cold. And the tourists? Geez! Well no need to become a snobby recluse. Get it in gear, pal, and give Maggie Mae's a shot. Comfort is Maggie's currency. Two large rooms greet you upon entrance, avoiding the shoulder-to-shoulder packed-house vibe of most 6th Street hotspots. True to its Rod Stewart muse moniker, Maggie's hosts a variety of classic rock and blues bands on the weekends, although the volume level is perfected to allow conversation to flow amidst the guitar solos. And the staff is friendly and attentive, so odds are good you won't be standing with cash in hand for twenty minutes at the bar, while your order for a pint of Shiner slowly turns into a frustration martini, hold the tip. But Maggie's true treasure lies in its rooftop balcony. Open aired to catch the night breeze that covers downtown every evening, it's the pitch-perfect spot to watch the out-of-towners get rowdy down below. Looks like fun, but you're an Austinite now, and hey, that scene is so two months ago...so get out of the apartment and get some r and r on Maggie Mae's rooftop.
