When the town was founded, it was originally called Washington. Then, in 1797, the settlement was renamed Belleville. It was incorporated into the greater New Jersey area in 1839. Portions of the town were taken to create both Woodside Township and Franklin Township. Belleville was also the first city on the east coast of the United States to have a Chinatown. Officially, Chinatown was developed in 1870.
