Bellevue Overview

Bellevue is a suburban community located in the Omaha Metro Area. This larger community is home to about 64,000 people, and that makes it the third largest in the state, just behind Omaha and Lincoln. The city is a modern, beautiful community with much to offer to those who wish to call it home. For those who are living in the area, commuting to downtown Omaha takes about 20 to 25 minutes from most areas of Bellevue. 

What is the history of Bellevue?

Europeans first settled in Bellevue in the 1830s. It was incorporated in 1855. That makes it the oldest town in the state and the second oldest settlement. The community was first founded for its location in the fur trade by the Missouri Fur Company. The area grew to be a supplemental bedroom community for Omaha over the coming years. Eventually, in 1921, Offutt Air Force Base was built here by the U.S. Strategic Command, which helped to grow the area's population. 

How is the weather in Bellevue?

Bellevue's overall climate and weather are very much the same as that in Omaha. During the winter months, temperatures can drop well below 0 in the winter months. Typically, the area gets about 28 inches of snow each year. During the summer months, temperatures can climb into the 90s, and the area has mostly sunny days. The area gets about 30 inches of rain as well. Spring months and fall months are times when thunderstorms are common, though there are many days of cool breezes as well as very high temperatures. 

How do I get around town?

Bellevue is fairly easy to access. Most people drive vehicles throughout the city. The Metro Transit is a public transition option that provides routes throughout the city along the major roadways. Also note that the Route 95 Bellevue Express bus system will run during the week into Omaha, providing a way for residents to get into town without using a car. 

What is the Bellevue commute like?

The main roadway in Bellevue is the Kennedy Freeway, which takes drivers from Bellevue into Omaha. That drive is about 20 minutes most of the time. Highway 270 is the next largest major roadway in the city, traveling from Offutt Air Force Base into the city. To reach Papillion or Gretna, take this route. Other major thoroughfares here include Fort Crook and Chandler, which are where most of the major businesses are in the city. Traffic is good most days unless the weather is bad or there is an accident on the freeway. Expect normal rush hour from 7:30 am to 9 am and then again from 3:30 until 6 pm.

What are the local media outlets?

For those who are looking for the most popular media outlets here, consider newspapers such as the Gretna Breeze and Bellevue Leader to be the main local options. In addition to this, the Omaha World Herald is another popular newspaper. KETV-TV is the local Omaha TV channel. As for the radio, there are numerous local radio channels, including KGOR, 99.9, KFFF, 93.3, and KIS-HD2, 96.1. All of the popular streaming apps and online media resources are available here, too. 

Why live in Bellevue, NE?

If you have to work or go to school in Omaha, living in Bellevue makes sense. It offers larger homes and apartments at competitively lower rates than what may be paid in Downtown Omaha. There are a wide range of benefits to calling this community home outside of just being close to the city. It has a dense but suburban feel, with numerous smaller neighborhood parks and walking paths throughout the area. The city has a strong public school system with sports programs for most age groups. The city is also noted for being a small town, even though it offers just about all of the amenities that are found in the big city. It is also within a short distance of the local military base, which makes it a good option for those who want to stay close to loved ones on the base.

What Bellevue landmarks should I see?

There are a few notable landmarks in the city, but none is more impressive and important to the region than Fontenelle Forest, a large nature preserve that is accessible to residents but also offers a natural habitat across its more than 1,400 acres of land. In addition to this, Marcus Twin Creek Cinema is a movie theater here that has served as a popular place to spend time on the weekends for decades. There are also numerous locations for great food and bars, with a popular option being Stella's Bar & Grill. For history lovers, the Omaha and Southern Railroad Depot, constructed in 1869, is one of the largest offerings. There is also a log cabin that dates to 1830 and the Pioneer Cemetery that was first settled in 1856, all of which can be toured. 

What is there to do around Bellevue?

The city is within a short drive to Omaha, which is home to various arts and educational programs. However, there are a few fantastic areas to explore in the city, including the Treerush Adventures, a rope course that is within the Fontenelle Forest. There are about 20 miles of hiking trails in this area, too, as the forest spans some 1,400 acres. The Tregaron Golf Course and Willow Lakes Golf Course are both located within the city, while Willow Lakes is operated by the U.S. Air Force. The city is also home to the Lied Activity Center, which is a community recreation center that offers programs for kids and adults. There are senior programs here as well. 

Any annual festivals or Bellevue events to know?

There are fun things to do throughout the year in Bellevue and nearby, including Bellevue Rocks the Riverfront Festival, which happens each year in June. It is a carnival-like event with games, food, and lots of fun things to do. During the month of August, the Bellevue Hippie Fest takes place at Falconwood Park. The city also has a lot of fun with parades, fireworks, and concerts for the holidays, including Christmas, the Fourth of July, and New Year's. There are fall festivals that include everything from hayrides to pumpkins. 

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

For those looking for things to do within a couple of hours drive from Bellevue, there are plenty of options to consider. A visit to the city of Western or Plymouth, both moderately sized communities within a short drive, is well worth exploring. A trip to the Homestead National Monument of America or the Double Nickel Campground could be a lot of fun as well. The Missouri National Recreation River and Scotts Bluff National Monument are also located within about a two-hour drive of the city. 

Where is the best place to move in Bellevue?

Most areas of Bellevue are welcoming. Some of the most common areas for apartments in Bellevue are those near Route 370 and S. 36th Street. There are numerous smaller apartments located throughout the city as well, including near Capehart Road and Cornhuskers Road. Also note that there are new areas of development in the city, especially in the central commercial district, which may offer some new opportunities to find a home to love close to all of the city's best amenities, including shops and restaurants.
