Coronado Overview
Coronado, CA is a stunning beach town, just removed enough from San Diego to feel quiet and quaint. It’s Hollywood and military history provide a rich background for today’s culture, but living in apartments in Coronado is just as timeless as ever. Located on an island 1 mile wide and 8 miles long (in some parts), this small resort city of about 25,000 people is a beautiful, historical ideal.
What is the history of Coronado?
Coronado was founded in the late 1800s, and the opening of the Hotel del Coronado in 1988—the largest resort hotel in the world at the time—largely marks the beginning of its modern history. Its military history began in the early 1900s as it earned its name as the birthplace of naval aviation, North Island became a permanent military location in 1919, and is currently still home to the Naval Base Coronado.
How is the weather in Coronado?
Located in the greater San Diego area, the weather in Coronado is exactly what you’d expect from Southern California. Summers are warm and arid, and winters are cool and lightly cloudy, with temperatures rarely dipping into the low-40s.
How do I get around town?
The island is small and easy to travel around—most of it is accessible by bike, and in fact, getting around by bike or foot is encouraged. There are two buses that operate during the day, and they are the only public transit on the island. Otherwise, having a car is the best way to get around, and Highway 75 stretches the length of the island.
What is the Coronado commute like?
The worst traffic you’ll find in Coronado is on destination summer weekends. There is only one bridge into the city from the mainland, the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, and traffic can get thick. Other options here are water taxis and ferries that will take you from Ferry Landing to Embarcadero.
What are the local media outlets?
There are few small media outlets serving the city locally. Eagle Newspapers, established in 1912, publishes weekly local news. The Coronado Times provides in-depth coverage of local news, and Crown City Magazine issues a monthly publication focused on celebrating and sharing the stories of the community.
Why live in Coronado, CA?
The small resort city of Coronado lies on an island directly off the coast of San Diego. It is nicknamed “The Crown City” after its Spanish translation, and is home to one of the best beaches in the country. Its downtown district is rich with history, boasting many restaurants, theaters, and shops making their mark on the local culture. While Coronado is a resort city, nothing can take away its small-town charm.
What Coronado landmarks should I see?
Downtown Coronado is itself quite popular, but the city also boasts its Waterfront Walkway—home to the USS Midway and the Midway Museum—Seaport Village, and the Glorietta Bay Promenade. The town is also home to one of San Diego’s top landmarks, The Homecoming Statue, as well as the legendary grand Victorian Hotel del Coronado.
What is there to do around Coronado?
Coronado is a great hub of activity. The island and bay are home to a wash of recreation, including biking, beach and water activities, parks, golf, and family fun, and the downtown area has a great selection of arts and culture, with nightly music and other events to pass the time.
Any annual festivals or Coronado events to know?
In greater San Diego, there is some sort of music, art, or film festival nearly every day of the year. The annual Miramar Air Show in September is the largest of its kind. Summer here boasts a wash of well-known food festivals, including the San Diego Brew & Food Festival and Oysterfest, as well as the world class “sand castle competition” found at the Sun & Sea Festival.
Where are the nearby vacation spots?
For urban vacation opportunities, San Diego is just across the bay. For a quieter, more rural vacation, head north into Big Sur and the central coast, where the Pacific is similar, but beaches are replaced by rugged cliffs for an unmistakable coastline. Or, head inland to Joshua Tree National Park, home to some of the world’s best natural desert treasures.
Where is the best place to move in Coronado?
There is no bad place to live in Coronado—the town is surrounded by water, and much of it boasts views across the bay to downtown San Diego. There are two main neighborhoods to look for apartments in Coronado, each with something a little different. The Village is the main section of the island, overlooking the San Diego skyline, and The Shores is literally seconds from the beach, and is made up of high-rise condominiums.
