Chula Vista has a deep history beginning with the Kumeyaay tribe of Native Americans. Spanish explorers arrived in 1542. With the coming of the Sante Fe Railroad in the 1880s, Chula Vista became a well-known citrus growing region. The Rohr Aircraft Corporation, a major employer, came to Chula Vista in 1941. The postwar population boom saw the city become a major residential area of San Diego.

Weather in Chula Vista is typically in the 70s in summer and the 50s in winter. Average precipitation is about 10 inches throughout the year. March is the wettest month with around 2 inches of rain. Temperatures rarely go above the high 70s or below the mid 40s.

There are several bus and trolley lines around the city. Buses are handicap accessible. The transit system is part of the greater San Diego system with connections to San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico. Boating and camping is available at the Mission Trails Regional Park. The Joshua Tree National Park offers a unique experience of the desert ecosystem. Las Vegas is 337 miles away by car and the Grand Canyon is a 558 mile drive.

On the west side are the older, more established neighborhoods, and to the east are more recently developed areas.
