La Jolla Overview

If you're searching for apartments in La Jolla, you're going to find one of the friendliest neighborhoods in San Diego. La Jolla is a great place to raise a family. Or, you might want to move here because you're attending The University of California, San Diego. You could even retire here because there are lots of options for senior living apartments in La Jolla. Whatever your reason, you'll find near-perfect weather, a welcoming community, and lots to see and do close to any La Jolla apartments your pick.

What is the history of La Jolla?

La Jolla incorporated as part of San Diego in 1850. Frank Botsford, AKA, the Father of La Jolla, bought land in 1868 and began developing it with George Heald. Later, the railroads made it easier for people to get to the area, and real estate developers started to build resorts to attract visitors. By the end of the 1800s, cottage-style homes lined Prospect Street and Girard Avenue, transforming La Jolla into a place for artists. During the 1920s, Spanish inspired houses began to replace the earlier cottages. And after WWII, there was an influx of military families who settled in La Jolla in large subdivisions. By 1960, over 17,000 people lived here. Today, those numbers have grown to over 40,000.

How is the weather in La Jolla?

Warm days and clear skies can stretch from June to October, with an average temperature ranging from 67°F to 77°F. The hottest part of the summer lasts between the end of July through the end of September when temperatures can get as high as 85°F. From November through April, expect average daily temperatures to range between above 50°F through  67°F. And the coldest days are around Christmas time with temperatures at 50°F.

How do I get around town?

La Jolla is 14 miles north from the San Diego International Airport. You can use the San Diego Metropolitan System's route 30 bus that runs between San Diego, Old Town, and North County, with a stop at Silverado and Herschel in downtown La Jolla. Alternatively, you can hop Amtrak or the Coaster, with connections in the Old Town Transit Center, San Diego, and Sorrento Valley Coaster Station.

What is the La Jolla commute like?

Driving in from the south and the airport, take I-5 North to the La Jolla Parkway exit. If you're heading in from the north, Take I-5 South and the La Jolla Village Drive exit. And from the east, travel on 79 South to the I-8 West. Use exit 17 State 67/Magnolia Ave toward downtown to merge onto CA-67 North. Follow the Prospect Avenue Exit for CA-52 West. Then, use the left two lanes to take the La Jolla Parkway exit. La Jolla Pkwy becomes Torrey Pines Road to the west. Prospect, Cave Street, and Coast Blvd are all major thoroughfares that you'll want to explore, as well. Traffic in San Diego is busy. It's a good idea to plan your trips accordingly. Try WAZE, San Deigo, to get up to the minute traffic reports and directions for the best routes to take.

What are the local media outlets?

There's a variety of local media to consume in La Jolla. From local and national newspapers to online media, and television, you have a little bit of everything to keep you up to date. The major newspapers to check out are The San Diego Union-Tribune, The Daily Transcript, Star News, and The San Diego Business Journal. Online, head to La Jolla Light for local news, entertainment, and more. On television, you'll find CBS on channel 8, local news on 10, and FOX on channel 5. You can also tune in for talk radio at KOGO (600 AM). Find sports on KLAA (830 AM), and today's hits on KMYI (94.1 FM).

Why live in La Jolla, CA?

If you love beautiful weather with lots of sunshine and outdoor activities, then you can beat living in La Jolla, CA. From a world-renowned university to breathtaking beaches, arts and culture, delicious food, a college town's nightlife—and plenty of family-friendly fun— there's something for all ages.

What La Jolla landmarks should I see?

The University of California San Diego has a long history from being a military training base to a marine research facility, then becoming a state university in 1903. Today, UCSD has an extensive list of credits and academic awards in science and education. Another famous landmark is La Valencia Hotel, AKA, the Pink Lady. The 1926 Hollywood-style glam apartment hotel is old La Jolla at its finest. A well-known landmark on Prospect Street, it boasts panoramic views of the Pacific coastline and breathtaking La Jolla Cove.

What is there to do around La Jolla?

With all the things there are to do in La Jolla—there's one place that you'll visit often. Fun and adventure await at La Jolla Cove. You can play on the beach or bask in the sun, of course. But you can also go kayaking or snorkeling and diving in the underwater park. If you want to visit La Jolla's beaches, there's no better way to do so than to walk. Take the La Jolla Coast Walk Trail and go as far as you want from La Jolla Caves Beach to Whispering Sands and La Jolla Strand Beach.

Any annual festivals or La Jolla events to know?

Visit the farmer's market every Sunday, where they feature live music. And don't miss the annual Arts and Wine Festival, Harvest Festival, Market Anniversary, or the annual spring egg hunt. One of the highlights of the year is the annual grunion run when thousands of silvery fish spawn on Southern California beaches. It only happens at a specific time in spring and summer and between midnight and three am. Everyone should experience a grunion run.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

While you're looking for apartments in La Jolla, think about how convenient it is to find exciting things to do close by on vacation. And if you simply want to unwind, you can always book a weekend at the Estancia La Jolla Hotel and Spa right here in town. Get pampered with a full-service spa that boasts a heated outdoor pool and landscaped gardens. Enjoy massages, facials, aromatherapy, and more. On the other hand, you might want to take the whole family to the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institute of Oceanography UCSD. This interactive museum overlooks the Pacific and showcases climate and oceanography research discoveries by Scripps scientists. Or, keep it light and go wine tasting with your sweetheart. Indoor or outdoor fun, there's always something to do nearby on vacation.

Where is the best place to move in La Jolla?

There isn't a bad place to live in this San Diego, California neighborhood. In fact, people consider La Jolla one of the best places to live in California. It has a suburban vibe with lots of families because of the highly-rated public schools. It's also a gorgeous place to retire. And, of course, UCSD is nearby. Check out the Mesa Nueva-East Campus Neighborhood for La Jolla apartments. And if you have a family look into Burton Place for apartments in La Jolla that are close to great schools.
