Franklin Park Overview
Franklin Park is an incorporated village located about 15 miles west of northern Chicago. O’Hare International Airport abuts the village’s northwestern border. A major railroad crossing and easy access to local freeways make Franklin Park and ideal industrial location. It ranks as Illinois’ fourth-largest industrial center. What is the history of Franklin Park?
First-generation farmers from Germany first settled the area in the 1840s. The Atlantic & Pacific Railroad built a train station and laid railroad tracks on Elm Street in the unincorporated locale in the 1870s. Two other railroads followed suit. Cook County real-estate broker named Franklin bought four farms with a combined 600 acres in the early 1890s. He named the location Franklin Park, which has grown into a top industrial community.

Franklin Park is located at the convergence of the Great Plans and the Great Lakes. That means four seasons of weather with long, cold winter, humid and warm summers, and temperamental transitions during the spring and fall seasons. Nearby Lake Michigan moderates local weather, which averages a seasonal high temp of 84 degrees in July. That average high drops to just 31 degrees in January, when the average low bottoms out at 19 degrees.

Ease of access is what founded Franklin Park and makes it great today. U.S.45 and I-294 run through it. Several railroads converge in the village, and O’Hare International Airport abuts the village’s northwest border. That makes getting in and out of Franklin Park a breeze.

An I-294 loop that connects to I-94 and two federal highways run through or very near Franklin Park. Several state highways also run through village borders. Commercial railroads to just about anywhere, and O’Hare International Airport immediately northwest of the village make it a great spot for commerce and locals who want to get in and out by just about any means.

Franklin Park enjoys coverage in two local newspapers. The weekly Herald-Journal newspaper is based in Franklin Park and provides local news coverage. So does the Daily Herald newspaper, which covers suburban Chicago communities. The Chicago Tribune is one of the nation’s oldest and most respected daily newspapers. It provides news coverage in Franklin Park and the greater Chicago area. Virtually all major television networks and local radio are available in Franklin Park.
