Franklin Park Overview

Franklin Park is an incorporated village located about 15 miles west of northern Chicago. O’Hare International Airport abuts the village’s northwestern border. A major railroad crossing and easy access to local freeways make Franklin Park and ideal industrial location. It ranks as Illinois’ fourth-largest industrial center. That helps to keep employment rates and opportunities high.

What is the history of Franklin Park?

First-generation farmers from Germany first settled the area in the 1840s. The Atlantic & Pacific Railroad built a train station and laid railroad tracks on Elm Street in the unincorporated locale in the 1870s. Two other railroads followed suit. Cook County real-estate broker named Franklin bought four farms with a combined 600 acres in the early 1890s. He named the location Franklin Park, which has grown into a top industrial community.

How is the weather in Franklin Park?

Franklin Park is located at the convergence of the Great Plans and the Great Lakes. That means four seasons of weather with long, cold winter, humid and warm summers, and temperamental transitions during the spring and fall seasons. Nearby Lake Michigan moderates local weather, which averages a seasonal high temp of 84 degrees in July. That average high drops to just 31 degrees in January, when the average low bottoms out at 19 degrees.

How do I get around town?

Ease of access is what founded Franklin Park and makes it great today. U.S.45 and I-294 run through it. Several railroads converge in the village, and O’Hare International Airport abuts the village’s northwest border. That makes getting in and out of Franklin Park a breeze.

What is the Franklin Park commute like?

An I-294 loop that connects to I-94 and two federal highways run through or very near Franklin Park. Several state highways also run through village borders. Commercial railroads to just about anywhere, and O’Hare International Airport immediately northwest of the village make it a great spot for commerce and locals who want to get in and out by just about any means.

What are the local media outlets?

Franklin Park enjoys coverage in two local newspapers. The weekly Herald-Journal newspaper is based in Franklin Park and provides local news coverage. So does the Daily Herald newspaper, which covers suburban Chicago communities. The Chicago Tribune is one of the nation’s oldest and most respected daily newspapers. It provides news coverage in Franklin Park and the greater Chicago area. Virtually all major television networks and local radio are available in Franklin Park.

Why live in Franklin Park, IL?

Franklin Park is ideally situated to escape the confining nature of a mega-city like Chicago. Many great communities are located near Franklin Park. If you want to fly virtually anywhere or have friends flying in for a visit, O’Hare International Airport borders Franklin Park’s northwestern area. Easy access to I-294 and U.S.-95 make it much easier to commute to jobs elsewhere in the greater Chicagoland area. You get the best combination of small-town atmosphere and big city convenience, entertainment, and career options.

What Franklin Park landmarks should I see?

With O’Hare International Airport located immediately northwest of Franklin Park, the airport is Franklin Park’s dominant feature. Many local residents work for the nation’s busiest airport. The convenience of living right next to one of the best-paying and most secure job providers in the region make Franklin Park a great place to live for pilots, flight attendants, and airport staff.

What is there to do around Franklin Park?

Easy access to Chicago and all its great entertainment options abound. Two Major League baseball teams, NBA, NFL, and NHL teams offer professional sports all year long. Major Division 1 NCAA sports programs abound. So do local concert venues, live theater, and some of the nation’s best museums.

Any annual festivals or Franklin Park events to know?

Local village-oriented festivals and larger events in the greater Chicagoland area offer lots of fun. The Franklin Park Fest celebrates the village’s history. The village also hosts the annual Railroad Daze festival celebrating one of that area’s first and most important transportation industry.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Vacationing near Franklin Park means choosing your level of fun and excitement. You can enjoy the exceptional urban setting of downtown Chicago and the nearby lakefront. If you prefer escaping city confines, lots of small town and rural settings invite numerous outdoor activities in nearby rural Illinois and Wisconsin vacation destinations to the north.

Where is the best place to move in Franklin Park?

Franklin Park is a comparatively compact community, particularly in relation to Chicago. O’Hare International Airport to the northwest could cause noise issues if you reside immediately near it. Most of the village, though, is configured in more traditional and idyllic neighborhood settings. Proximity to commercial industrial areas make Franklin Park a great place for well-paying blue-collar jobs.
