Write a ReviewNestled in the heart of the Springfield Metro region, Holyoke is often referred to as 'The Paper City' thanks to its long history of manufacturing. Boasting plenty of scenic beauty ranging from nature trails to water views, this charming slice of New England is an excellent place to live, work and play.
One of the first true planned industrial cities in the nation, Holyoke was centered around the construction of its namesake dam. Officially incorporated in 1855, the city was a hub for paper milling and other industries. Increasing its population by a 100 times over in just a few short decades, Holyoke added a reliance on water-based power to help with its fast growth. One of the first cities in the state to begin an ongoing Farmer's Market, an embrace of evolving agriculture and technology have helped Holyoke thrive to its current state of general prosperity.
Summers are hot, sunny and prone to humidity, while snow in the winter is common if rarely extreme. Falls are quite comfortable, with jacket weather the norm in the crisp evenings, and spring brings with it plenty of flowers and occasional rain storms.
Bus service around the city is operated by the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority, and commuter rail returned to the city in 2015 thanks to a new Amtrak stop. Many locals rely on a bicycling for navigating the downtown scene, with numerous bike lanes found with ease, although a personal car or truck is still the norm.
A number of interstates run in and around the city, including I-91 which heads north to Northampton and I-391 leading south to Springfield. I-90 east is the most used passage towards the job market of Boston, and is prone to consistent construction delays and 9-to-5 gridlock. Holyoke itself is generally an easy city to get around in, save the occasional fender bender and standard rush our delays.
Print news is covered by 'The Republican' primarily, and radio is largely based out of the nearby Springfield market. UMASS College has a popular station in WMUA, spinning indie rock, hip hop and jazz, while commercial stations cater to classic rock, political talk and urban formats for the most part. Those living in Holyoke apartments will find it easy to connect with most major broadcast television stations, and Holyoke Media is the local public access offering.
