Kansas City Overview

As a place where smoky barbecue meets jazz, Kansas City is a hidden treasure of the Midwest. Living in Kansas City rental homes and apartments is like getting VIP access to a musical metropolis. The city’s distinctive sensibility is formulated by its mixture of historical charm with novel vibes. KC is the perfect blend of small-town charm and big-city energy, with inexpensive homes, vibrant neighborhoods, and an incredible culinary scene. This is more than a city, it’s an urban expression — a place where the food is famous, and the atmosphere is as welcoming as Midwestern warmth.

What is the history of Kansas City?

Simply stated, Kansas City, Missouri, is a jazz-infused slice of Americana. It all began in the 1800s when cowboys and railroads accelerated the country’s westward expansion. From the days of Prohibition, jazz and barbecue became the municipality’s lifeblood. The city gave birth to the Kansas City Chiefs football team and hosted the historic 1920 Republican Convention. The golden years of the Royals baseball team arrived in the 1970s. Now known as a Midwest treasure where the past coexists with the present, Kansas City is a fusion of history, music, and mouthwatering food.

How is the weather in Kansas City?

The weather in Kansas City is so unpredictable, it’s like a mood ring. Bring a raincoat for the spring, when the tulips are blooming. Is it summer? If it is, prepare for intense heat, shorts are obligatory. Fall is the flannel season, when the colors outside are riotous. Bring a parka because winters can be cold and even snowy. Weather in Kansas City is as spontaneous and unpredictable as the city’s jazz music, so be prepared to wear a wide range of clothing throughout the year, conditions in the Midwest can catch you off-guard like a jazz riff!

How do I get around town?

Kansas City is a city on the move, yet there are moments when you may just want to leave the car keys at home. Cool areas like Westport and the Crossroads make downtown a relatively easy place to get around by foot. Buses run, but they aren’t exactly as much of a staple as they are in New York City, for instance, the city’s streetcars are a great way to experience a more retro vibe. The infrastructure that connects KC to the rest of the globe is Kansas City International Airport. Commuters of all stripes will find their groove in Kansas City, whether they’re cruising in a vehicle or just going for a wander around the city’s boulevards.

What is the Kansas City commute like?

Visitors should take note — Kansas City has a highway rhythm! The city’s main east-west groove is Interstate 70, which connects Kansas and Missouri. Cutting north to south through the center of Kansas City is Interstate 35. I-435 encircles KC like the edge of a barbecue plate. Need to escape highway congestion? On Interstate 35 in particular, rush hour can turn into a battle. Fortunately, the Broadway Bridge is good at surprising people (for the better). Keep your focus on the road, and consider putting on some jazz music, KC’s highway twists are tolerable with a pinch of patience.

What are the local media outlets?

There’s a veritable musical feast on KC’s radio dial. Listen to hip-hop on Hot 103 Jamz or alternative rock on 96.5 The Buzz. While KCUR is tops when it comes to public radio, KMBZ is your go-to station for breaking news. Whether it’s the latest sports scores or regional updates, you can get your daily dose of everything local from The Kansas City Star paper. The radios and newsstands of KC have you covered whether you’re listening to music or studying the news. This city has a real beat to it, whether you can hear it or not!

Why live in Kansas City, MO?

Smoked barbecue and jazz fill the air in Kansas City, the pulsing heart of the Midwest. Homes for rent in Kansas City have that welcoming Midwestern vibe, so moving in feels like joining a large family. Nights are bustling, and the skyline glows, thanks to the Power & Light District. KC combines culture and athletics, from the Nelson-Atkins Museum to the thunder of football’s famous Chiefs. With its affordable apartments, delicious food, and a touch of tasty barbecue, this city has all the makings of a cozy home, complete with charming real estate.

What Kansas City landmarks should I see?

There are so many famous sites in Kansas City that it’s hard to keep track of them all! Union Station is a historical center, while the Nelson-Atkins Museum displays impressive art. The Liberty Memorial is a towering monument commemorating World War I. For retail therapy, visit the city’s Country Club Plaza — a major shopping destination. Knowledge flourishes at UMKC, and the Kauffman Center plays host to concerts by renowned musical artists. Kansas City is home to several historic and contemporary structures, from jazz clubs to fountains, every turn reveals a new tale in this Midwest treasure.

What is there to do around Kansas City?

Anyone can find their ideal playground in Kansas City. Nightlife in the historic 18th & Vine Jazz District and the vibrant Power & Light District makes these areas popular destinations for tourists. Showing off the city’s mouthwatering specialties, barbecue excursions are an absolute must. The Chiefs’ games and the Royals’ baseball outings both attract large crowds. If you live in Kansas City rentals, you should definitely check out Loose Park or First Fridays in the Crossroads Arts District. No matter what your entertainment preferences are — jazz, sports, delicious food, or any other type — KC has you covered!

Any annual festivals or Kansas City events to know?

Kansas City is a master of the fiesta. There are street vendors and music at the Plaza Art Fair, a popular artistic spectacle. The American Royal World Series of Barbecue is like the Olympics of barbecue. As far as music lovers are concerned, the Kansas City Folk Festival is a panacea. To celebrate the beginning of the Christmas season, don’t miss the colorful ceremony of the Plaza Lights. You won’t forget the annual festivals in Kansas City, Missouri, which include both outdoor feasts and dazzling sights.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Enjoy a relaxing road trip that starts in Kansas City! Just a few hours to the south lies Table Rock Lake, where you can blissfully row along the water’s edge. Nature lovers will love the proximity of the Ozark Highlands. East of here, in St. Louis, you’ll find the Gateway Arch and laid-back vibes. In the mood for amusement parks? No problem — Branson will satisfy that desire, while a beautiful drive around Grand Lake in Oklahoma transports you to the beach. There’s an abundance of scenic driving destinations around Kansas City, from lakeside getaways to Arch-centric excursions.

Where is the best place to move in Kansas City?

There’s a palpable hum of energy in the neighborhoods of Kansas City. With its abundance of murals, galleries, and cafes, finding a new home or apartment rental in the Crossroads Arts District is a hipster haven. Historic allure and vibrant nightlife meet in Plaza/Westport making it a popular destination to move as well. If you’re looking to find a home in an are with plenty of options for delicious, freshly grown food, you might consider a move to a River Market rental. Meanwhile, there’s a warm, community vibe for those who find themselves settling in the Waldo area. Further afield, Downtown offers residents breathtaking views of the city skyline. With a wide range of neighborhoods that cater to different tastes, from artistic to historic, this Midwest jewel offers a multitude of places to rent that feel like home.

Amber2+ years in Kansas City

February 25, 2025

We call it "Paris of the Plains" because KC really does have it all! It's a very green city with lots of great parks. We've got a lot of culture here, lots of great restaurants, plenty of places to go hiking or catch a show--you name it. It's truly a great place to live. However, public transportation does leave a little bit to be desired. While it's free, bus stops can be few and far between outside of Downtown.
