The city gets its name from its proximity to the Kansas River, and was named when a trading post was established in the location to facilitate trade in the area (and was also called West Port). Because of its location near the river of its namesake, Kansas City thrived as a hub of commerce and trade, and the city continues that trend today.

Summers are warm and bright, but the temperature rarely gets above the mid-90s. The city has a public transportation system, locally known as the Metro. Day passes are just $3, allow unlimited boarding, and can be bought easily from any bus driver. There’s Clark’s Point, which offers a beautiful view from the top of a hill, an impressive statue of the Lewis and Clark expedition, as well as a history lesson if you like. Several parks were also battlegrounds during the Civil War. The city was influential in the development and popularity of jazz, and you can visit the jazz museum to learn more about its rich history. Science City at Union Station is a great museum for the whole family, and it has a giant movie screen. In all, Kansas has more than 20 museums, and several universities have campuses in the metropolitan area, including the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences.

What is there to do around Kansas City?

The city also has plenty to get out of your apartment in Kansas City and enjoy. You can feed your stomach and unwind at the bevy of restaurants and entertainment destinations throughout the city. Jess and Jim’s Steakhouse was named the “best steakhouse in the country” by Playboy magazine, and you’ll only find it in Kansas City. For food and fun in one stop, head on down to the Alamo Drafthouse for a burger and a brew while you watch a new-release movie or an old-favorite classic. Several “escape the room” puzzle rooms have set up shop in Kansas City, so get together with some new friends and piece some clues together. Unlucky at puzzles, but lucky at cards, right? If it doesn’t go well at the puzzle room, you can also find casinos, including one on a riverboat.

Any annual festivals or Kansas City events to know?

Kansas City holds the usual annual festivals you might expect from any major city, such as St. Patrick's Day, Easter parades and a Polish festival, but it also throws some parties you’re only going to find in Kansas City. Too many to count to really know for sure, but some people say Kansas City has more fountains than Rome, so on Fountain Day, April 12, everyone gets as many selfies as they can with the city-owned waterworks to celebrate the wonderful wet beauty of them all. Kansas City isn't in the exact geographical center of the country, but it’s pretty close, so from April 27–May 7, everyone celebrates being in the middle with Middle of the Map Fest, which includes performances, shows and screenings from local artists. In June, you can travel back in time (figuratively) during Old Shawnee Days and experience what a typical day was like in the 1920s farm community, Shawnee Town. Kansas City isn’t stuck in the past, though, and the KC Pride Fest was named one of the top 10 LGBT festivals in the nation.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

River Market is a revitalized neighborhood with dozens of lofts and condominiums for rent. Typically, couples in this neighborhood both work, are well-educated, and are in their late 20s to early 30s. Most anything you might need in your daily life is within walking distance, and the neighborhood also hosts the Midwest’s largest farmers’ market. Westport is historically where Kansas City, MO, began and has one of the oldest shopping and dining districts in the city. Most of the residents are young professionals. We call it "Paris of the Plains" because KC really does have it all! It's a very green city with lots of great parks. We've got a lot of culture here, lots of great restaurants, plenty of places to go hiking or catch a show--you name it. It's truly a great place to live. However, public transportation does leave a little bit to be desired. While it's free, bus stops can be few and far between outside of Downtown.
