The first cabin was built by Adam Strouse in 1802, serving as a shelter for a mail carrier. The town's development is closely tied to the Erie Canal. When the canal's route was determined, a village began to develop, which was named Lockport, inspired by the elaborate set of locks to be constructed. The construction of these locks began in 1821. The town's growth was fueled by tolls from the canal and the harnessing of hydropower from the locks, powering early industries.
