Mobile Overview

Do you want a home near relaxing beaches or one that’s in a bustling downtown area? Take your pick with Mobile rentals! The Port City, located in the southern tip of Alabama, offers easy access to the Gulf Coast’s beautiful beaches. And it has a thriving urban center filled with trendy restaurants, live entertainment, and many other amenities! But that’s not all you’ll find here. Mobile’s an affordable place to live, with a cost of living that’s quite a bit lower than other cities in the South. It’s also close to Pensacola and New Orleans for memorable day trips. Let’s go over what you can expect as a Mobile resident — and why you should consider becoming one!

What is the history of Mobile?

Mobile’s origins as a city go all the way back to 1702! That’s when the French founded this port town. Having a port is what helped the city grow and develop throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Cotton, timber, and other goods were the main exports for many years. New Orleans usually gets the distinction of being the Birthplace of Mardi Gras. But the first celebration is believed to have taken place right here in Mobile! The city’s economy has had its ups and downs, mainly in the aftermath of war — both the Civil War and World War II. But it’s been undergoing plenty of growth in recent years, bringing more business and job opportunities to the area!

How is the weather in Mobile?

It’s balmy for the most part! Mobile’s location on the shores of Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico gives it a subtropical climate. You’ll get hot summers with temps that reach the 90s during the day — plus lots of humidity! Nighttime temps in summer are usually in the 70s. But winter brings much milder temperatures to the area. Daytime highs are typically in the 60s, with lows in the 40s. Fall and spring often have highs in the 70s and 80s and lows in the 50s and 60s. Mobile has its share of rainy weather, especially in winter. And it’s also at risk of tropical storms and hurricanes — so prepare accordingly during hurricane season!

How do I get around town?

Deciding where you should look for Mobile rental homes depends on how you’re planning to get around. Downtown Mobile is a highly walkable area. But being in the outer suburbs means you’ll be better off with a car for convenient transportation. Mobile does offer public bus service via the Wave Transit System. That includes several routes throughout the city. There’s also ferry service to Gulf Shores and Dauphin Island. Need to head out of town? Mobile International Airport, right by the bay, offers multiple domestic and international flights. Greyhound also has a bus station located just off US-90 in Mobile. Amtrak is also planning to restart train routes from Mobile to New Orleans in the near future — giving you even more transportation options!

What is the Mobile commute like?

How long can you expect your daily commute to be? The average time for Mobile residents is just over 21 minutes. But note that it depends on your route. The Airport Blvd and University Blvd intersection is one of the most congested in the city. But you’ll also have access to a few major roads, like I-10 in the lower half of the city. I-10 runs west to east. I-65 runs north to south through the middle of Mobile. I-165 runs north to south in the upper part of the city. Mobile homes for rent in or near downtown may shorten your commute — depending on where you work!

Why live in Mobile, AL?

There’s the white sand beaches. There’s also a fun-filled downtown area with lots to see and do. And you’ll also have a low cost of living! These are just a few of the things that are increasing the demand for rental homes in Mobile. The city also has major employers in several industries, including aviation/aerospace, healthcare, IT, logistics, and maritime. Mild winters are another perk of living here — no snow shovels or snow tires needed! Instead, you’ll have many days of pleasant weather to enjoy the outdoors.

What Mobile landmarks should I see?

There’s no shortage of these in Alabama’s oldest city! Love old houses? Visit the Richards-DAR House Museum, Bragg-Mitchell Mansion, and Bellingrath Gardens and Home to tour historic homes. There’s also the Condo-Charlotte Museum House and the Historic Oakleigh House Museum. Head to USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park and the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico to see historic ships. Visit the Mobile Carnival Museum for Mardi Gras exhibits and galleries. Or wander through the Mobile Museum of Art to see over 6,400 works of art from all over! Take walking tours of historic districts, like Church Street, Oakleigh Garden District — and more!
