Saco Overview

Saco, Maine has existed in some form for hundreds of years, first as a home to Native American tribes and later, to English settlers. It sits just 15 minutes away from Portland, Maine and is a part of the Portland Metro Area. Yet, with its friendly walking trails, fascinating historical sites, and small-town eateries, it exists in a world all its own.

What is the history of Saco?

Apartments in Saco are surrounded by history and beauty on all sides. According to archeological and written evidence left by French and English explorers, Saco sits on what used to be the grounds for native American villages. These existed in the 1600s and the early 1700s. Around the same time, the English began to settle the area. The English settlement eventually became one of the first of its kind in what would eventually be known as New England. Settlers truly became established in the area in the early part of the 1700s when the lumber industry as well as fishing and farming built a stronghold in the area. Originally, the towns in the area consisted of Pepperrellborough and Biddeford. Pepperrellborough eventually changed its name to Saco.

How is the weather in Saco?

Generally speaking, the weather in Saco, Maine tends to be mild to chilly. In the winter time, residents can expect to see lows in the teens and highs in the 30s. During the warmer months, low temperatures start in the lower 50s. The highs linger around the low-70s. Residents can also expect to see about 10 days of rain each month in this coastal town.

How do I get around town?

Saco does have a public transit system that includes both buses and trains. However, given the number of rental car agencies in the city, it’s safe to assume that having a car in town probably makes transportation a lot easier in terms of getting around. The bus lines run four routes that deliver residents to various destinations around town as well as dropping them off in the nearby towns of Biddeford and Old Orchard Beach (OOB). Amtrack also keeps a station in Saco, allowing travelers to visit nearby cities, like Portland and Wells. 

What is the Saco commute like?

For those who’d like to visit this small town by car, it’s possible to enter Saco by any number of roads. Both I95 and I195 run through Saco. The One, the Five, the Nine, the 112, and the 208 also have routes going in and out of the city.  The One turns into Main Street in the middle of town. Given that the town has a population of just over 20,000, it’s fairly safe to say that visitors won’t find big-city traffic jams in Saco for the most part.

What are the local media outlets?

A number of media outlets exist in Saco, making it easy for residents to stay informed about all the major happenings in town. The Saco Bay News covers news about Saco and the neighboring towns. It’s 100% online and offers residents a first look at what’s going on in the community. The news site also gives people the option to submit news story ideas and information about upcoming events. The Biddeford/ Saco/ OOB Courier is another major site to find headlines and happenings around town. The city also boasts several weekly newspapers and journals. Some of these are located in Saco proper, while others are located in nearby towns. One interesting thing to note about the media in Saco. It’s home to Saco River Community Media, a public access station, which allows residents to create their own shows. 

Why live in Saco, ME?

These days, many people feel tired of living in the rush, rush environment of the big city where no one knows their neighbors and life is lived apart from the beauty of nature. Apartments in Saco, Maine take people away from all of that. The city boasts friendly people, interesting historical sites, and ready access to some of the best nature offerings in the world. It’s small-town living at its best.

What Saco landmarks should I see?

One feature that’s remarkable about Saco, Maine is the number of notable landmarks. Given the city’s small size, it’s almost astonishing that it has so many cool things to do. Most notably, Saco is located near both the Saco River and the beach at Saco Bay. A trip to Ferry Beach State Park offers visitors walks through stunning wooded areas and plenty of trails for walking and biking. The park is also close to the Saco Bay and seaside views. Aside from all of this, this small-town town has plenty to offer in terms of historical sites and museums, including the Saco Museum. These historical sites dot the city’s walking tour. Given the lengthy history of the town, many of its most notable sites include old homes, like the Emma Hall House. This stately home offers visitors a glimpse at the Queen Anne style architecture that found favor in the city in the late 1800s. 

What is there to do around Saco?

Funtown Splashtown Amusement Park and Aquaboggan Water Park are the places to be if for those who want to spend the day playing. Schooner Mini Golf and Ice Cream makes spending a day on the mini-links both fun and delicious. If it’s hiking or walking that people are after, the shores of Saco River and Saco Bay provide residents with happy hours of solitude and beautiful scenery to soothe the soul.  For those who want to get out of their Saco apartments for the night and take a nostalgic trip down memory lane, there’s the Saco Drive-In Theater. This throwback from the past is nestled in a grove of trees and promises to create plenty of good memories.

Any annual festivals or Saco events to know?

Fairs and festivals have a way of bringing out the locals, allowing them to partake in the arts and culture scene and to catch up with the neighbors. They represent the true spirit of small-town living. It comes as no surprise, then, that Saco and the nearby towns have a number of festivals and happenings worth note throughout the year. Winterfest is celebrated every year in nearby Biddeford. Fiddle lovers get their groove on at the Scottish Fiddle Festival, while lovers of choral music will want to check out the Maine Chapter Choral events. 

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Being on the Eastern Seaboard offers those who rent apartments in Saco the opportunity to reach a number of vacation destinations in just a few hours. Portland, Maine is the closest big city and is less than a half hour away from Saco.  Boston and all its historical charm sits just under two hours away from Saco. Trips to New York City and to Philadelphia are just five and six hours away, respectively. Naturally, given Saco’s proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, beach vacations offer great weekend getaways, too.

Where is the best place to move in Saco?

Anywhere by the beach seems to be popular in Saco. Areas like Old Orchard Beach and Ocean Park are examples. However, given the city’s low crime rate as well as the generally friendly disposition of the town’s residents, it’s probably safe to say that it’s possible to live anywhere in Saco and feel at home.
