St. Louis Overview

Looking for a Midwestern city with a low cost of living and tons of great things to do? St. Louis — the Gateway to the West— is the city for you! The city’s famous Gateway Arch is a big draw for visitors, of course. But for those who live here, St. Louis also has many amenities and activities to enjoy all year round. And the city has major employers in healthcare, higher education, finance, and other industries. The city’s location along the Mississippi River also means you get scenic views and lots of options in and around the area for outdoor recreation. Let’s explore more about why you should check out St. Louis rental homes!

What is the history of St. Louis?

St. Louis started out as a fur trading post under French rule back in 1764. It came under Spanish rule in 1770. But thanks to a secret treaty drawn up by Napoleon, St. Louis went back to being a French city again. In 1803, it officially became part of the U.S. after the Louisiana Purchase. Did you know that Lewis and Clark kicked off their famed expedition from St. Louis that same year? During the 1800s, the city attracted thousands of settlers and turned into a huge location for business. It also hosted both the World’s Fair and the Olympics in 1904! The iconic arch was built in the late 1960s. And the city has continued to experience revitalization over the past few decades.

How is the weather in St. Louis?

Looking for a city that gets all four seasons? St. Louis has hot summers with highs in the upper 80s or low 90s. Nighttime temps are usually in the low 70s or upper 60s. Fall and spring have daytime temps that tend to stay in the 60s or upper 50s — perfect for exploring outdoor areas! What’s winter like in St. Louis? You can expect highs in the 40s and lows in the 20s. March through August are typically the rainier times of the year. And winter often brings snowy weather, especially in January.

How do I get around town?

Do you need a car? You might find driving around more convenient unless you live in or near the downtown area. But St. Louis does have public transportation options to consider. MetroLink light rail has several lines throughout the county and in neighboring Illinois. MetroBus has more than 70 routes serving Missouri and Illinois. Keep these options in mind when looking at homes for rent in St. Louis if you don’t want to drive around. Traveling outside the city? There’s an Amtrak station and Greyhound bus station in the Gateway Transportation Center. And St. Louis Lambert International Airport in the northwestern part of town offers tons of domestic and overseas flights!

What is the St. Louis commute like?

Your commute times will end up depending on where you live and work and how you get around. Looking for rental homes in St. Louis that are on the outer edges of town? The average commute time is around 23 minutes. But living in the outer suburbs may mean a longer time getting to and from your job. Your commute might be shorter if you live and work in or near downtown. St. Louis has several major roads that can become backed up during rush hour. I-70 runs west to east, while I-55 goes north to south. Other major roads include I-55, I-64, I-255, US 40, US 50, and US 66.

Why live in St. Louis, MO?

St. Louis homes for rent are in high demand for many reasons! The city offers a cost of living that’s lower than Chicago and other cities in the Midwest. Major employers are located here, like BJC HealthCare, Washington University, and Edward Jones. The city has the best of both worlds — the feel of a bigger city mixed with small-town appeal! It’s got lots of options for shopping and dining, along with arts and culture, sports, and much more! It also has an incredible public transportation system, short commute times, and great weather.

What St. Louis landmarks should I see?

The city has several historic landmarks to visit. Head to the Gateway Arch— the city’s most iconic landmark — for amazing views of the area. Visit the Missouri Botanical Garden, the oldest botanical garden in the U.S., to see the Japanese Garden, Climatron, and Sachs Museum. The Anheuser-Busch Complex contains a few historic buildings dating back to the 19th century. There’s also the Eads Bridge — the very first steel-truss bridge in the entire world!   Take a drive over the bridge for beautiful views of the Mississippi River. Other landmarks to put on your must-see list include the U.S. Customhouse and Post Office, Tower Grove Park, and Wainwright Building.

What is there to do around St. Louis?

The arch might be St. Louis’ most famous attraction. But it’s not the only thing to see in this vibrant city. Take a narrated cruise on the Mississippi River aboard an 1800s riverboat replica. Catch a ballgame at Busch Stadium, home of the St. Louis Cardinals. Visit Six Flags St. Louis for thrill rides and water rides! There’s also the St. Louis Aquarium and St. Louis Zoo for animal lovers. And you can enjoy 3D light shows, a 200-foot carousel, and other fun attractions at St. Louis Union Station!

Where is the best place to move in St. Louis?

Want to be close to all the action? Look for St. Louis rentals in the downtown area. That puts you close to restaurants, nightlife, shopping, and more. Lafayette Square, located close to downtown, has a slower pace with Victorian homes and elegant townhomes. St. Louis Hills offers single-family homes in a family-friendly area. Hi-Pointe is a mostly residential area that’s conveniently close to the zoo and other attractions. Southwest Garden is near the botanical gardens, while Central West End has a great location close to Forest Park and St. Louis University!
