Stillwater Overview

Stillwater is a college town with a small-town mentality. Stillwater Apartments are scattered in and around the city. Most apartment communities encourage socializing and offer amenities that work toward bringing residents together. As a place to live, Stillwater is affordable and comfortable, with just enough culture and recreation to give residents that warm, fuzzy feeling inside.

What is the history of Stillwater?

"Stillwater was included in the country's purchase of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. William L. Couch set up his ""Boomer"" colony in 1884 on the banks of the creek people called 'Still water"" and only a few years later the area's first Land Run occurred. In one day a community of more than three hundred called the area home. The government of Oklahoma soon designated Stillwater as a land grant college site and the city has never looked back."

How is the weather in Stillwater?

"Given it's location in Oklahoma, Stillwater is typically dry and pleasant in the winter, snowfall averages just over seven inches a year. In the summer, the area is hot, humid, and sunny. It isn't unusual for temperatures to exceed 100 during warmer months, but water activities keep residents cool and comfortable. The city lies in the dreaded ""tornado alley,"" but most apartment communities have shelters available to residents."

How do I get around town?

The College maintains bus service during the academic year for those needing to get downtown or to campus. Carpooling and car sharing is encouraged throughout the city. Owning a vehicle isn't necessary, but during the summer, it can be a challenge to get to town without your own vehicle. The nearest major airline is located in Tulsa or Oklahoma City, but a Regional Airport lies three miles from the city.

What is the Stillwater commute like?

The average commute time to work is fifteen minutes, and many people live close enough to their place of employment to walk. There are two major highways running through Stillwater, State Highway 51 (aka 6th Avenue), and U.S. 177. Main Street downtown runs into 177 just south of the city, and also crosses 51 for easy access in and out of the city.

What are the local media outlets?

Culture is alive and well here. Stillwater Radio is located in the city and runs four stations, a country station, classic rock, adult contemporary, and sports/talk radio that also feature local sporting events.
