Prior to the arrival of European settlers, the area surrounding Titusville, Florida was inhabited by Native Americans. People have been living in the area since about 5,000 BC, mostly surviving by foraging and fishing. The first European settlers to arrive in the area were Spanish explorers, and they brought with them a wide variety of infectious diseases. The United States acquired Florida from Spain in 1821, and it officially claimed sovereignty over Florida.
