Sarasota Overview
Beautifully situated on the southwestern coast of the sunny state of Florida, Sarasota apartments offer world class living that has made the it a go-to destination for years. From the sandy beaches and thriving nightlife scene to the unparalleled shopping and diverse cuisine, Sarasota is a gem of a city within the Sunshine State.
What is the history of Sarasota?
Incorporated in 1913, Sarasota grew quickly as a beachfront town. The Ringling College of Art and the Tamiami Trail helped draw further attention and ease of travel to the municipality in the 1920's, as did the easy railroad access of the town, thanks in no small part to the completion of the train bridge over the Manatee River. The Ringling Brothers (of the circus dynasty) eventually came to call the city home, investing in a large amount of real estate and leading the charge on developing Sarasota even further. The city's bay area was further developed and drew a large number of fresh visitors in the 1960's, leading Sarasota to become a center of real estate well into the 1990's.
How is the weather in Sarasota?
As is typical of most of Florida, Sarasota boasts a climate that borders on the tropical savanna end of the spectrum - hot summers, mild winters, and ever-present humidity. Rain showers are commonplace but also rarely last more than a few hours, and one could literally count the number of days Sarasota dropped below freezing in the last hundred years on one hand. It's sunny weather has unsurprisingly attracted a large number of retiree residents.
How do I get around town?
The SCAT area bus service is a popular public mode of transportation for many residents of apartments in Sarasota, although a majority of residents do own personal automobiles. The Sarasota International Airport acts as a regional hub for several cities in regards to air travel, and while there is no proper AMTRAK stop the local government has increasingly been considering the addition of a light rail high-speed train. Being a beachfront city, a large number of tugboats, barges and personal water machines are commonplace in Sarasota.
What is the Sarasota commute like?
Sarasota is known for a large number of 'roundabouts', and these turnkey roadways can occasionally lead to traffic jams. Commuters may thus experience delays during peak morning and afternoon hours, although the traffic is far less than the larger populations of Miami or Orlando. I-75 acts as the area's major freeway, while smaller roadways such as U.S. 41 aka Tamiami Trail runs north to south through the city. SR 789 traverses many of the island roads throughout the city, making it popular for locals and those in search of a scenic drive.
What are the local media outlets?
The 'Sarasota-Herald Tribune' acts as the city's primary daily newspaper source, although a larger number of broadcast stations call Sarasota home, including the Suncoast News Network. DirectTV is a popular service provider in the area, with a local ABC affiliate and the typical national programming readily available. The Sarasota is one of the largest in the state, offering a wide array of genre programming including talk, oldies and classical.
Why live in Sarasota, FL?
So much more than simply another beach town, this Florida jewel of a city has character to spare and a welcoming vibe that is instantly tangible. The bay views are breathtaking, and the low crime rate and consistent real estate market has led Sarasota to a steady economic base. From fun in the sun to great family amenities, it's easy to see why this Florida destination has remained a popular draw.
What Sarasota landmarks should I see?
The Edwards Theater has been around since the 1920's, an ever-present home from programming ranging from opera to dramatic performances, and recently earned a slot on the national registry of historic places. The Sarasota Orchestra has been creating beautiful music since the 1940's, and the Wezel Performing Arts Center is a newer construction marvel, offering stunning bayside views as well as diverse cultural programming. Italian architecture is celebrated widely in the structures that make up Sarasota, with the Ringling Museum a particularly popular example. The Sarasota School of Architecture draws students from far and wide to the city, making its residents a diverse and inquisitive mix, and the Sarasota Courthouse is a structure that simply must be seen in person to fully appreciate.
What is there to do around Sarasota?
Residents of Sarasota apartments will rarely be lacking in excitement. Spend an afternoon getting up-close-and-personal with a variety of sharks and other fascinating underwater species at the Mote Marine Laboratory, wander among the colorful flora at the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, or get really close to nature at the Sarasota Jungle. Take in a piano recital at the Asolo Repertory Theater, or simply spend an afternoon with a good book relaxing on the sunny sand beaches that surround the city.
Any annual festivals or Sarasota events to know?
Florida is known for a huge assortment of festivals, and Sarasota is no exception. The Annual Sarasota Chalk Festival is the first street art gathering of its kind in the entire United States, 'drawing' a large influx of artists and their fans each and every year. The Sarasota Film Festival has been delighting cinematic fans since 1998, while the Ringling International Arts Festival offers a mixed bag of mediums for fans of diverse culture. A number of street fairs are also known to pop up around the city on a regular basis, boasting live music and delectable seafood delights.
Where are the nearby vacation spots?
Florida is certainly not lacking when it comes to the vacation department. Take the short drive to the theme park mecca of Orlando, or head to the big city nightlife excitement of Miami, both just a few hours away from Sarasota. The nearby airport offers easy access to flights ranging from New York to Europe, with the only limitations seemingly being your budget. Of course, Sarasota also offers easy access to a large number of seaside vacation attractions, from deep sea fishing to windsurfing adventures.
Where is the best place to move in Sarasota?
Hover Arcade near Main Street act as home to City Hall and a number of other municipal buildings, leading a large number of apartments and homes to take up residence further to the north end of the city. Bayfront views are of course in high demand and thus command higher prices, but wherever you end up in Sarasota the winning mix of ambiance and natural beauty are sure to yield a winner. Good luck with your Sarasota apartment hunt!
