West Fargo represents the best of both worlds — a friendly, small town environment with all of the advantages of a metropolitan area. Its population of more than 38,000 continues to grow, making West Fargo one of North Dakota's fastest growing areas. Because of its emphasis on quality education, the area boasts an excellent student-focused school district around apartments in West Fargo. Its family-friendly attractions include a park district that features world-class offerings and a mix of quality housing options to serve the needs of any household. USA Today newspaper named West Fargo the nation's 11th best city to live in in 2020. with a population of more than 36,000. West Fargo is in Cass County and is a suburb of North Dakota's largest city, Fargo, with West Fargo apartments serving families and young professionals who work in the city. 

What is the history of West Fargo?

Founded in 1917 when Equity Cooperative Packing Company began construction of its plant in what is now the town, Armour and Company bought the plant in 1925 and the housing built for its employees north of what is now Main Avenue. Those residents were forced to move from those homes, with many relocating south of the highway to form their own community that would become known as Southwest Fargo. In 1930, voters north of Main Avenue approved the creation of West Fargo. By 1967, as Southwest Fargo continued to expand, the village took on the name of the City of West Fargo. In 1989, the City of West Fargo merged with the community north of Main Avenue to become West Fargo.

How is the weather in West Fargo?

West Fargo summers can be long and warm, while its winters are freezing, snowy and windy. The average temperatures vary from 3°F in the winter to 83°F in the summer, and rarely dips below -18°F in the winter or above 91°F in the summer. Skies are often partly cloudy throughout the year in West Fargo.

How do I get around town?

In addition to traveling around in a car, truck or SUV, there are other options for getting around West Fargo. If you are a biker, you will find the Bike FM website useful. It offers maps, safety tips, the relevant bicycling laws, bicycle shops, and information about bike rentals. There is also bus service available in the area. Check out the MATBUS website for useful information like a route map, calendar, some bus riding basics and details about paratransit door-to-door services. West Fargo is also near Hector International Airport in Fargo for travelling in and out of the area. What is the West Fargo commute like?

The primary routes used by West Fargo commuters consist of major east-west and north-south routes. The east-west routes include Main Avenue, 12th Avenue, 13th Avenue, Interstate 94, 32nd Avenue, 40th Avenue and 52nd Avenue are primary east-west roads. The north-south roads are Sheyenne Street and 9th Street. With fewer north-south options available, heavy traffic typically concentrates on each road approaching I-94. Traffic going east-west is heaviest along the Fargo boundary because of the proximity and attraction to Fargo and Moorhead.

"The news in West Fargo is available in multiple formats, including several newspapers and magazines, and access to broadcast stations that serve the area. The newspapers and magazines covering the area include Area Woman Magazine,  Fargo Forum, Fargo Monthly, Prairie Business, West Fargo Pioneer and The Forum of Fargo-Moorehead. Broadcast stations include KRDK Channel 4 (MyNetworkTV), WDAY Channel 6 (ABC), KVLY Channel 11 (NBC), KFME Channel 13 (PBS), KVRR Channel 15 (FOX) and KXJB Channel 30 (CBS). There are more than three dozen radio stations serving the area with a variety of formats, including talk, Christian, Rock, Popular, Country and Sports radio."

Although it is close to the metro center of Fargo, there are attractions to take in within West Fargo's borders. Bonanzaville, USA: This history museum of the Cass County Historical Society consists of 40 buildings on 12 acres, including many that represent West Fargo's history. Some were moved to the museum grounds, forming a village that includes buildings with themes. Some of those include a replica of a prairie church, a schoolhouse, Fargo's first house, a general store, a drug store and a fire station. There are also museums celebrating aircrafts and automobiles. Children's Museum at Yunker Farm: This interactive museum features more than 50 hands-on exhibits and is considered  one of the nation's top 25 children’s museums. The museum offers a wide variety of educational programs and special events.

What is there to do around West Fargo?

There are plenty of things to do in West Fargo, including the Nite to Unite community event in the summer hosted by the West Fargo Police Department with food, face painting, first-responder demonstrations and display booths; the West Fargo Public Library's summer reading program for kids and adults; and an annual New Year's Eve Party hosted by West Fargo Shakers.

Any annual festivals or West Fargo events to know?

Some of the annual festivals held in West Fargo include the Big Iron Farm Show, a large farming event held at the Red River Valley Fairgrounds; Bonanzaville Pioneer Days, featuring food, a parade, demonstrations and tours; Hamfest at the West Fargo Fairgrounds, featuring presentations and equipment to buy; Red River Valley Fair, featuring arts, crafts, entertainment, livestock and fireworks; and West Fest, a September community event, featuring a softball tournament, parade, firefighters' ball and a pancake feast. 

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Within a few hours of West Fargo, there are several vacation opportunities, including: Cedar Lake in Aitkin, Minnesota, known for great fishing; Cold Spring, Minnesota, located just outside the Sauk River Chain of Lakes' interconnected system of 14 lakes flowing from the river; Fisher Grove State Park in South Dakota, featuring a traditional rock river crossing and a country club with a 10-hole course. 

Where is the best place to move in West Fargo?

Depending on whether you are looking for more traditional or more modern, West Fargo offers different neighborhoods for different tastes. West Fargo's oldest neighborhoods are located north of the city, near Main Avenue and northern Sheyenne Street. The homes here are more traditional, smaller single-family houses, along with some multifamily structures. South toward I-94, there are more modern neighborhoods and the newest development is south of the interstate. Most of these neighborhoods in the south include parks and schools that attract more families looking for easy access to facilities for children.
