Anoka Overview

As a suburb of Minneapolis, Anoka is just about 30 minutes from the City of Lakes. The vibe in Anoka is like a mix of urban and suburban, due to it’s diverse mix of culture, things to do and family-friendly communities. Although Anoka does have some cold winter weather, there are lots of public outdoor spaces to enjoy nature. The schools are considered above average, which helps to make Anoka an attractive destination for families. At the same time, many single, young professionals live in Anoka, MN, supported by the many career opportunities that abound. And with less than 20,000 residents within city boundaries, Anoka feels more like a small town than a bustling city, though it boasts qualities of both.

What is the history of Anoka?

Anoka, Minnesota is situated very near where the Rum River and Mississippi Rivers join. In fact, it was named for this location, because Anoka is a Dakota Indian word that means “on both sides.” Anoka owes its growth at the end of the 19th century to its booming lumber industry, which thrived due to the ease of its sawmills being able to leverage the water power from the two rivers. As time went by, the economy in Anoka shifted toward more service-related businesses. Today, there is a diverse economy that offers work to the more than 18,000 residents, but many of the original lumber mills still exist.

How is the weather in Anoka?

Anoka residents enjoy a typical Midwest climate, with cold winters and hot summers. Like many other Midwest cities, Anika’s hottest summer month tends to be in July, when temperatures can reach up to the low 90s. A fair amount of humidity usually accompanies those steamy summer months, too. In winter, which in Anoka runs from December to February, the temperatures can drop below zero, but rarely past the single digits. The main thing about winters in Anoka is the amount of snow. Blizzards are considered to be common. For the population of Anoka, the snow is an added bonus that offers that chance for lots of fun winter activities. Spring and fall in Anoka are temperate, pleasant and long-lasting.

How do I get around town?

For a small town with under 20,000 residents, the government of Anoka has gone above and beyond to offer a range of public transportation options. First, there’s a stop in Anoka on the Northstar Commuter Rail Line, which easily brings people to and from Minneapolis for work, shopping and more. Anoka also has a generous network of sidewalks and walking trails, such as the Great Northern Trail and the Rum River Trail, both of which are well-maintained by the government. Downtown Anoka is nicely walkable, with many things to do, see and enjoy located within close proximity of each other. The only downside as far as getting around in Anoka, MN is that road traffic can get a little bit heavy during peak times, but nothing compared to larger cities.

What is the Anoka commute like?

Many Anoka residents work in Minneapolis, and the commute to and from is made easier by the Northstar Commuter Rail Line. The train ride back home from Minneapolis takes about half an hour, and there’s a large parking lot at the station in Anoka where commuters can pick up their cars when they arrive to complete the journey back to their apartments in Anoka. The train offers free Wifi, onboard bicycle storage and work tables, so commuters can be productive en route if they so choose. For drivers, there’s U.S. Highway 10, connecting to Interstate 35 into Minneapolis. The journey by car takes between half an hour and 45 minutes, depending upon the time of day.

What are the local media outlets?

As a small town, Anoka doesn’t have its own TV or radio station. It’s served by the Twin Cities media outlets, which offers a wide assortment of news and information channels, entertainment shows, sports shows and other programming. There’s a local newspaper, called the Anoka County Union Herald, which serves to dispatch local news about the area, primarily concerning high school sports announcements and information about upcoming community events. This local paper also serves as an advertising outlet for local businesses.
