DeLand Overview

Deland, FL is in a great location in Volusia County. Anyone can leave their Deland apartment and be in Daytona Beach in 30 minutes, or Orlando in about 40 minutes. The city is home to Stetson University and a couple of smaller colleges. There are many outdoor activities and local attractions to enjoy. Deland has a robust economy and great year-round weather, which makes this a great choice when moving to central Florida.

What is the history of DeLand?

The area around Deland was first settled in the 1870s. Before there were any roads in the area, it could only be accessed by taking a steamboat up the St. Johns River from Lake Monroe. Henry Addison Deland decided to build a town here after visiting from New York. Mr. Deland sold his business in New York and hired workers to lay out the streets and construct new buildings and homes. Most of the original settlers moved down from New York. Deland was the first city in Florida to have electricity and became the Volusia County seat in 1887.

How is the weather in DeLand?

Deland gets around seven inches of rain every month. The city especially gets a lot of rain between May and September. The daytime highs can climb into the 90s or even the low 100s from June through September. The highs between December and February are in the 70s, with lows dipping down into the 40s. The best time of year to visit is in the spring or fall, when highs are in the 70s and lows are in the 50s. The last time that it officially snowed in Deland was in 1989.

How do I get around town?

Volusia County's public transportation system is called Votran. It operates several dozen bus routes throughout the county, connecting between Deland, Deltona, Orange, and other suburbs. A north-south commuter train runs down through Orlando, called SunRail. Once the last 12 miles of track are laid for SunRail within the next few years, there will be commuter rail service between Deland and Orlando. Deland is not a very walkable city, so most people do need to own a personal vehicle. There are a lot of bike paths, however, so if someone wants to bike from their Deland apartment to work, it's often possible.

What is the DeLand commute like?

The average commute in Deland lasts just 22 minutes, one-way. Interstate 4 bypasses Deland to the east of the city, and it is the fastest route for anyone who needs to commute to Orlando or Daytona Beach. Morning rush hour in the Deland area can last from 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. The afternoon rush lasts from about 3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. It can take up to 45 minutes to reach Daytona Beach during rush hour, and up to an hour to reach Orlando. State Road 44 connects Deland with New Smyrna Beach to the east. Highway 17 is an alternate route to Orlando but usually doesn't shave any time off the commute.

What are the local media outlets?

There are several newspapers and radio stations in Deland. The West Volusia Beacon is a weekly paper that includes coverage of Deland. The Orlando Sentinel has a branch that covers Deland and the surrounding area. The Daytona Beach News-Journal covers most of Volusia County as well, including Deland. WYND is a religious station at 1310 AM in Deland. WTJV is a Spanish-language station at 1490 AM. WJLU is a Christian radio station based in New Smyrna Beach, it transmits in Deland on 97.3 FM. WOCL is a classic hits station that transmits on 105.9.

Why live in DeLand, FL?

Deland's great climate is usually the first reason why people say you should choose to live here. Another good reason is that housing and rental costs are lower in Deland than in many of the surrounding cities and suburbs. Apartments in Deland are much more affordable than one can find in Orlando or Daytona Beach. Florida doesn't have a state income tax, which makes living here even easier from a financial standpoint. It's also just a short drive to reach Florida's famed white-sand beaches along the coast.

What DeLand landmarks should I see?

The Stetson Mansion in Deland is the only Gilded Age home to be built in Florida. It's over 130 years old and tours are available. The Old Volusia County Courthouse is a Gothic-style building that was built in 1929. The Athens Theatre is a historic building that was constructed in 1929. It is a performing arts center that has multiple concerts from world-famous acts, in addition to several stage plays each year. Another important landmark is Deland Hall. It was built in 1884 and is located in the Stetson University Historic District.

What is there to do around DeLand?

People can leave their Deland apartments and be at the beach in 30 minutes. The St. John River is to the west of Deland, and Hontoon Island State Park is a great place for a visit. You have to take a ferry from the north to reach the island, but it's free to visit and explore the park. The Reptile Discovery Center is a safe and easy way to get up close with some of Florida's most famous reptiles and other wildlife. It has alligators, tortoises, and numerous large snakes. The City of Deland maintains many public parks to enjoy. The Barkley Square Dog Park is a 14-acre off-leash park where pet owners can let their four-legged friends get some exercise.

Any annual festivals or DeLand events to know?

Deland has more than 60 community events every year -- about five per month. There are parades on the Fourth of July, Veterans Day, and Christmas every year. The annual Main Street Dog Parade is exactly what it sounds like, pet owners dress their dogs in creative costumes and show them off in a parade. The Festival of the Arts happens every November in Downtown Deland.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Orlando is a great family vacation spot that's just 45 minutes south of Deland. People can stay at Universal Orlando Resort and visit Disney's Magic Kingdom Park, Animal Kingdom Theme Park, or Disney's Hollywood Studios. SeaWorld Orlando and Gatorland are two additional family-friendly vacation outings in Orlando. For a less-crowded vacation experience, there are cabins for rent in Hontoon Island State Park. For an oceanfront vacation, head east and choose from one of the many public beaches between New Smyrna Beach and Daytona Beach. Most public beaches have hotels within walking distance.

Where is the best place to move in DeLand?

Most of the apartments in Deland are in the southern part of the city, in the area of The Crossroads and De Land Southwest neighborhoods. These apartments are close to major shopping centers and State Highway 17. More apartments can be found just south of Stetson University, around the Orange Grove neighborhood. The Magnolia Heights and Ballard Heights neighborhoods are also good spots to go apartment hunting in Deland.
