Germantown Overview

The third most-populated community in all of Maryland, Germantown is a thriving locale that acts as home to close to 90,000 residents. Located just a stone's throw from the hub of Washington, DC, this on-the-go hot spot offers much in the way of convenience and potential for those eager to discover a new place to call home in the great state of Maryland.

What is the history of Germantown?

While never officially incorporated, Germantown was founded in the early 19th century, unsurprisingly by European immigrants. 1868 saw the creation of a school house, and by the 1920s both an additional school as well as a mill and electricity were to be found in the city. The addition of Interstate 270 in the 1950s led to great expansion in the vicinity, with a master planned housing community established by the 1980s. Today, Germantown acts as both a bedroom location for the greater DC area, as well as a thriving 'little big city' all its own.

How is the weather in Germantown?

Precipitation is commonplace throughout much of the year, and Germantown apartment residents can expect plenty of humid and hot summer months. Thunderstorms are typical in July, and the winters are generally mild, although snow is a factor. Autumn is generally most pleasant, with explosions of leaf color every October and November.

How do I get around town?

Montgomery County has much in the way of public transportation, from the Ride On bus system to the MARC Train System. Lightrail is currently in development as well, but in the meantime a majority of Germantown rental residents still rely upon a personal automobile for most day to day travel needs. Taxis and ride sharing options such as Lyft or Uber are easily found as well.

What is the Germantown commute like?

Interstate 270 is one of the most utilized roadways in all of Maryland, with I-70 and the Capital Beltway both close seconds. Commuters can expect regular slow conditions on most days, especially during peak morning and afternoon hours. Fender benders and construction delays add to the traffic woes, but Germantown's close proximity to the Washington, DC job market helps cut down on the drive significantly.

What are the local media outlets?

Both the 'Washington Post' and the 'Sentinel' act as major print news in the region, with the 'Germantown Pulse' a local-specific periodical as well. A diverse offering of radio programming is easily found, running the gamut from jazz to top 40, modern rock to country western. Political talk radio is also unsurprisingly in high supply, with most major broadcast television affiliates also readily available thanks to the close situation of Germantown apartments to the DC market.

Why live in Germantown, MD?

Boasting much in the way of cultural excitement and proud heritage, Germantown makes an excellent choice for anyone considering a move to the great state of Maryland. Flush with plenty of retail shopping, area school, and amenities such as restaurants and museums, this thriving township is ideal for anyone working in the Washington, DC area that longs for some smaller city ambiance.

What Germantown landmarks should I see?

The Blackrock Center For The Arts is a must-visit for any music or drama fan, and the Germantown Bank dates all the way back to 1922. The old Cider Barrel building is a unique piece of architecture and a testament to the 1960s, and Clopper Lake remains a gorgeous slice of nature beauty.

What is there to do around Germantown?

The Maryland SoccerPlex is an excellent place to cheer on the home team, while the Germantown Commons is the place for shopping bargains. Of course, the proximity of DC landmarks such as the Smithsonian and the Washington Monument are yet another bonus to a Germantown apartment, and why not top the weekend off with some pizza at Agrodolce?

Any annual festivals or Germantown events to know?

Oktoberfest is a hugely popular fall event held in Germantown, complete with live music and plenty of craft beer, while the Germantown Flea Market happens monthly and likewise draws large crowds on the hunt for treasures. Nearby food and craft festivals in DC are easily reached by those living in apartments in Germantown as well.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Get back to nature at one of Maryland's numerous natural parks or camping sites, or try your luck with a weekend of fishing at one of the numerous area lakes. Baltimore is loaded with art galleries, live music venues and world-famous eateries, and even the Jersey shore is within reach for those truly on the hunt for an epic road trip.

Where is the best place to move in Germantown?

Germantown apartments are as diverse as the residents that call them home, with many options available to fit most budgets and lifestyles. So don't let another day pass you by without one to call your own! Happy hunting!
