The 1970s and 1980s saw an increase in nightclubs and bars around the city, affectionately referred to by locales as 'Fat City', and Metairie offers a more 'family-friendly' version of Mardi Gras every February.

Like much of Louisiana, Metairie is highlighted by hot and humid summers, and precipitation often continues into the autumn months. Winter is generally dry and cool, with snow a rarity but still possible. Springtime is often the rainy season, hearkening the muggy months to come.

How do I get around town?

Most residents of apartments in Metairie rely upon a personal car or truck for most transportation needs, although bicycling has also taken on a new popularity in recent years. Jefferson Transit offers limited bus service throughout the city, and while the electric streetcars no longer run, taxis and ride sharing services are readily available. I-10 runs through the heart of Metairie from east to west, and both Route 90 and the Earhart Expressway both zig-zag across the city as well. Metairie is home to a number of broadcast stations, including WNOL and WGNO, and radio is largely a diverse mix of cajun, jazz, political talk and even gospel formats. The 'Metairie News' and the 'New Orleans Advocate' are both widely read newspapers in the area as well.

Mardi Gras is the obvious giant event in the city, with other annual fun such as the Bridge City Gumbo Festival and the Oyster Festival just a short trip from most Metairie rentals. Halloween weekend is home to the nearby Voodoo Fest, which in recent years as presented headliners such as Jack White and Iggy Pop, and the legendary New Orleans Jazz Festival is a short commute away as well.

Hit the road to Baton Rouge for some live brass bands and comedy shows, or drive along scenic I-10 to the shores of Gulfport, MS, both easily accessible to those residing in Metairie apartments.
