Gretna Overview

Gretna is the administrative center of Jefferson Parish, a part of the greater New Orleans area in Louisiana. This delightful town has a rich history, dating back to its founding in the early 1800s.  In fact, the United States recognizes Gretna on its National Register of Historic Places, effectively protecting the unique character of the city. Apart from this charm, you will also experience the captivating Louisiana arts and culture at all turns, especially during Gretna’s regular celebrations and festivals that involve the whole community. All in all, there is no wonder why the population here has remained quite steady for the past decade at around 17,800 residents. Many people who come to find apartments in Gretna choose to stay for many years or make a long-term home here.

What is the history of Gretna?

Gretna is a protected historical district under the federal government, and it is also the second-largest historical district in Louisiana. Naturally, this means there are some tremendous historical narratives and stories that can be told about the city and the area. It all began in 1815 when John McDonogh founded McDonoghville. It was quickly joined by Mechanickham, created by Nicolas Noel Destrehan in 1836. Finally, Gretna was established in 1938. Later, all three districts combined to form the contemporarily known Gretna. Interestingly, this city was named Gretna after Gretna Green in Scotland; this is because it became a prominent place for marriage just as Scotland became known for marrying couples eloping from England. The city would develop quickly into a prominent shipping center, as its location is along the Mississippi River. Today, you can wander the old districts and find original structures and architecture. Additionally, you can indulge in the abundant history more thoroughly by visiting many designated sites or dedicated museums and centers detailing Gretna’s intriguing milestones.

How is the weather in Gretna?

In Gretna you will find the weather will be on par with that of New Orleans. Residents love the subtropical, or warm-hot and humid, climate as it means they will never need to endure a long, cold winter. Certainly, the winters are short, from November to March, and rarely drop below 35°F. As such, spring will come early in Gretna and bring an abundance of sunshine and rain with them. On average, Gretna residents will experience thunderstorms a third of the year and see beautiful blue skies with warm sunshine for the other two-thirds of the year. Accordingly, summer is the longest season in Louisiana, lasting well into September with highs of 92°F.
