West Hartford Overview

If you?re in the market for a great new place to live, then an apartment in West Hartford, CT might just be the perfect place for you. This university town has grown and thrived since colonial days, to become the perfect mix of the best of urban and suburban living. The city?s exciting and lively downtown area called the West Hartford Center is a popular regional attraction drawing thousands of visitors every year. It has a reputation as a great place to raise a family with good schools and a lot of family-oriented recreational activities. No matter if you?re looking for a residence with multiple bedrooms or a cozy place for one, you?ll find a new home that?s just right for you in a West Hartford apartment.

What is the history of West Hartford?

West Hartford had its beginning long ago as a winter camping area for the indigenous Wampanoag Indians. In 1636 a group of settlers from Massachusetts moved into the area to found the town of Hartford, which enlarged itself a few decades later to create the town known as West Hartford today, which incorporated as a separate entity in 1854. Many of the earliest settlers as well as soldiers who fought in the Revolutionary War are buried in the town?s historic Old Center Burial Yard. It began to prosper and attract business and industry as it developed into a major transportation hub for the region in the 19th century.

How is the weather in West Hartford?

West Hartford is located in Connecticut in the northeastern part of the U.S., so the weather in winter is cold and snowy, with an average snowfall of 45?. If you enjoy winter sports you?ll love it here. Summers are nice with average temps in the mid-80s to the low 90s and some rainy days mixed in, but usually good weather to get out and enjoy the beautiful countryside and parks.

How do I get around town?

If your West Hartford, CT apartment is close to the Center or the newer mixed-use residential and retail development called Blue Back Square you may be able to walk or ride your bike to all the places you need to go, but most people living here will want to have a car to enjoy all the things that the city has to offer. There are plenty of other ways to get around though. Connecticut Transit operates several public bus lines through West Hartford and will take you anywhere in the city. Being a college town with two universities, it?s bicycle and pedestrian-friendly, and rideshare services like Uber and Lyft stay very busy.

What is the West Hartford commute like?

People driving in from the suburbs to work can make for heavy traffic during the rush hour so you might want to search for a West Hartford apartment that is close to work. I-84 is the main highway serving area residents along with US highways 6 and 44 and many smaller routes and state roads intersecting here.  A Hartford Line commuter train makes a stop in the city on the line from New Haven to Springfield with a shuttle bus connection located in Windsor Locks that will take you to the airport.  There?s also a bus rapid transit line running from Hartford to New Britain with two stops in West Hartford. Bradley International Airport is about a 20-minute drive to the north of Hartford.

What are the local media outlets?

West Hartford enjoys service from three local radio stations, WNWW, an AM station operated by the University of Northwestern-St. Paul with a religious format, WWUH operated by the University of Hartford and billed as public alternative radio, and WNPR operated by Connecticut Public Broadcasting. WVIT is the local NBC affiliate television station airing on channel 30, and residents can also watch West Hartford Community Television. Four different newspapers serve the area, three weeklies including the West Hartford News, West Hartford Press, and the Jewish Ledger, and one published monthly, the West Hartford Life.

Why live in West Hartford, CT?

The town?s motto is ?Where City Style Meets Village Charm? and that pretty well sums up what life is like here. With a population of about 64,000 people, it retains the elements of small-town living and a colonial charm with a vibrant and modern downtown culture close at hand. Whether you?re looking for music and entertainment, nightlife, cultural events, great food, or upscale shopping, you?ll find it all in West Hartford and nearby. The city is home to numerous educational, insurance, research, and tech companies, and along with the two universities they provide plenty of great paying jobs. If you have kids you?ll benefit from a variety of high-rated schools in the area, both public and private.

What West Hartford landmarks should I see?

As an old city steeped in America?s past, it has many 18th and 19th century homes and buildings with a wide range of architectural styles, and several historic districts to be explored. The Noah Webster House is the birthplace of the famous dictionary author, lexicographer, and politician, born here in 1758. Not far away is the Noah Webster Memorial Library constructed in 1917. The Old Center Burial Yard was the first cemetery in the city, founded in 1719, and contains the graves of many of the original settlers and Revolutionary War veterans. Elizabeth Park is a 102-acre historic public park extending from West Hartford into Hartford.

What is there to do around West Hartford?

There?s no good reason for those living in an apartment in West Hartford to ever be bored with so many cultural and entertainment opportunities nearby. Playhouse on Park is a popular venue for those wanting to enjoy plays, musicals, and other live shows. Blue Back Square and The Center downtown offer tons of shops, stores, and boutiques to browse, lots of quaint eateries and upscale restaurants, several movie theaters, and nightclubs. There?s also the Westfarms Mall a short drive or bus ride away. Kids love the highly-rated Children?s Museum of Connecticut, and for those who want to enjoy the great outdoors, there?s Elizabeth Park with its relaxing atmosphere, Westmore Park with barns and farm animals for the kids to pet, and the MDC Reservoir with hiking trails and fishing spots.

Any annual festivals or West Hartford events to know?

When it comes to annual events and festivals West Hartford is often outdone by its sister city Hartford, with the Hartford International Jazz Festival and the Riverfest music and beer gala being the big crowd drawers in the area. But the Annual Holiday Stroll in West Hartford center, now in its fourth decade, brings in folks from the other side and many neighboring towns to see the brightly decorated streets and buildings, watch the Santa parade, and listen to groups of carolers sing while enjoying good food and drink from the local establishments.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Your new apartment in West Hartford will put you right in the middle of some of the country's most popular vacation destinations. Just a few hours drive to the east takes you to Boston, Martha?s Vineyard, Nantucket, and all the charming fishing villages and beaches along the coast. If you head south New York City and Philadelphia are in easy reach as well as the Catskill Mountains and the fabled resorts there. And of course, the region is home to several world-class alpine ski resorts.

Where is the best place to move in West Hartford?

If you want to be close to all the restaurants, shops, nightlife, and many of the employers then you?ll want to search for a West Hartford apartment in the downtown city center, where there?s a mix of residential and business use, like the Blue Black Square. But the suburbs away from the city around Elizabeth Park, Treeborough Farms, Hillsboro, and many other neighborhoods are also quite lovely if you?re looking for a quieter setting for yourself and your family and you?ll find many great West Hartford apartments waiting for you to move in.
