When the United States acquired Florida from Spain in 1821, the American settlers in Florida needed to choose a territorial capital. At the time, the largest cities in Florida were Pensacola on the Gulf Coast and St. Augustine on the Atlantic. The leaders of these two cities wanted to establish a city halfway between St. Augustine and Pensacola as the territorial capital so that they could easily meet together. The leaders agreed on Tallahassee as the perfect halfway point.

Some of Tallahassee's major highways include Interstate 10, which runs east and west through northern Tallahassee, U.S. 27 (Monroe Street), which enters the city from the northwest and runs past the capital building, and U.S 90, which also runs east and west through the city.

Tallahassee has many great activities and places to explore. For museum lovers there's the Tallahassee Museum or the Museum of Florida History. Or take a step back in time with a visit to the John G. Riley House or the Mission San Luis. If you're interested in seeing alligators and other wildlife, take a visit to St. Mark's National Wildlife refuge or just float down one of the rivers near the city. Where are the nearby vacation spots?

If you're interested in taking a beach vacation, Panama City is only about two hours from Tallahassee. A trip to Orlando from Tallahassee would only take about 4 hours. You could also make a trip to historic Savannah, Georgia in about 4 hours. If you don't mind a longer drive, you could make a trip to New Orleans in about 6 hours.

Where is the best place to move in Tallahassee?

FSU and FAMU are located on the western side of Tallahassee, so many of the college students live on that side of town, while young professionals and families tend to live on the eastern side. Los Robles and Betton Hills are some popular neighborhoods in central Tallahassee. The Killearn area on the northeast side of Tallahassee is another popular area with several schools nearby. Some other popular neighborhoods include Indianhead Acres, and Midtown. Great Tallahassee apartments can be found all over the city.

Tallahassee is a hidden gem. Located at the top of the west part of the state, beauty, serenity, and nature quickly comes to mind. Although it's a college town, there is plenty for the locals to do without feeling overwhelmed. It's great for families and people who understand what quality of life means. Things are changing and the cost of living is going up in town, but it's still relatively cheap compared to other areas of the state. One of the best things about the city is the diversity and variety. There are a lot of boutique shops and eateries you won't find anywhere else, and the sense of community is unmatched.
