A beautiful architectural wonder of a facility opened in 1969, the New England Aquarium is definitely an appropriate destination for residents of Boston apartments. As an aquarium, it serves a need to educate the public about sea life, and the organization does so with leading research in ocean exploration and marine conservation. With education, entertainment and action, the aquarium hosts over 1.3 million visitors a year. But other than the boring education aspect of this home to sea life - it's fun! Here, you can watch Atlantic harbor seals and penguins play, examine the leafy seadragons and weedy seadragons in their 2,000 gallon tank, and explore the boneless sea jellies that have no brain or spine - but are amazing survivors of the sea. A world of waterscapes is provided at the aquarium, with exhibits representing the Amazon Rain Forest, a Pacific Reef Community, the Bahamas and Australia. A huge, four story Caribbean coral reef has a circular ramp that takes you all round the water landscape, with an area at the top to look down into the tank. It is 23 feet deep, 40 feet wide and holds 200,000 gallons of water! Incredible animals inhabit the aquarium, including a green sea turtle that has lived there since 1969 - possibly older than many of you reading this article - a sand tiger shark, giant Pacific octopus, Cownose Rays, moon jellies, and a giant anaconda. When you've examined the above exhibits through a safe wall of glass, really get into the ocean with the Edge of the Sea Touch Tank. Play with a sea star, hold a hermit crab and meet lobsters (but not for lunch). It's a fun place to bring children as well.
