Elyria Overview

It may have an unusual name, but once you learn how to pronounce it, chances are high that you'll fall in love with the lifestyle you can have in this small city close to Cleveland. With a unique history and a bright future, Elyria has grown to maturity by preserving the best of its past and retaining some of the character of its founder, who had a vision that included building homes that would be appreciated by early settlers. Today, the city still exists with that goal -- to treat its residents to a life that has a lot to offer on many different levels!

What is the history of Elyria?

This small city was founded in 1817 by Herman Ely, who constructed a house and several other buildings on the forks of the Black River. The site is 23 miles southwest of Cleveland. The first structures in Elyria included Ely's log house, along with a dam, a gristmill and a sawmill. Later, Ely began to build additional homes on the land he donated for that purpose, and the European-American settlers who arrived in the area named the town in his honor.  By 1852, when Ely died, the town had a population of over 1,500 and boasted five churches as well as three grocery stores, three flour mills, and a newspaper. Originally situated in Huron County, Ely is now the county seat of Lorain County, with a population in 2020 of more than 52,600.

How is the weather in Elyria?

Elyria experiences seasonal changes, but its weather extremes are much more moderate than some regions of the upper midwest. The coldest month is traditionally in January, when temperatures can dip to about 20 degrees, with an average high of 34 degrees. From May through September, temperatures typically hover from the mid-70s to the lower 80s, with the low ranging from around 50 to the mid-60s. Elyria has annual precipitation of just under 20 inches, but the humidity is moderate most of the year.

How do I get around town?

In addition to easy access to both major Interstates and local routes, residents of Elyria are served by Lorain County Transit for fixed route public transport, and also have an Amtrak station and Greyhound bus service to the city. Elyria is also near the Lorain County Regional Airport and is served by the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

What is the Elyria commute like?

The average commute for Elyria residents is only about 20 minutes, lower than the national average of 26 minutes. Traffic is minimal in and near the small city, with congestion limited mostly to traffic headed for Cleveland. Interstates 80 and 90 both lie to the north of Elyria, and U.S. Highway 20 is situated to the east of town. Other routes that serve local residents include State Highways 2, 113, 301, and 57.

What are the local media outlets?

Residents can tune into both AM and FM radio stations that broadcast from the city: WEOL is a news/talk station at 930 on the radio dial and is owned by the Elyria-Lorain Broadcasting Company, while Rubber City Radio Group, Inc., owns WNWV 107.3 FM. Three other available stations, all operated by Elyria-Lorain Broadcasting, are situated in nearby Huron or Norwalk. They include WKFM at 96.1 FM, WLKR-FM at 95.3, and WLKF at 1510 on the AM dial.

Why live in Elyria, OH?

The cost of housing is low compared to the rest of the country, with the median home price 54% below the national average at $107,600, and a median rent of $740, 36% below the national average. The overall cost of living is 14% below the national average, and Elyria has a diverse population, a relatively high job availability rate, short commutes, plenty of recreational opportunities, and abundant amenities.

What Elyria landmarks should I see?

The river still runs through Elyria, and the city has a network of parks and playgrounds, along with some historical sites. The Lorain County History Center and Hickories Museum, both on Washington Avenue in Elyria, both seek to preserve the early history of the city. Elyria is also home to Lorain County Community College, known for its Stocker Arts Center, Spitzer Conference Center, and Culinary Arts Institute.

What is there to do around Elyria?

Outdoor activities are especially popular with apartment dwellers in Elyria, and they are available to residents during most seasons. Favorites include the waterfalls at Cascade Park (they can be breathtaking in the winter!), Rowland Nature Preserve, where fishing is the big draw, and Sandy Ridge Reservation to view birds, butterflies, and other local wildlife. You can enjoy a quiet picnic or an energizing hike through the Black River Reservation, or charter a boat to fish for walleye, smallmouth bass, and yellow perch in nearby Lake Erie. The Hickories Museum is well worth repeated visits, and there are also numerous options for young and older sports enthusiasts.

Any annual festivals or Elyria events to know?

There's no lack of things to do in Elyria, and some favorites, like a great flea market and charity campout, are repeated year after year. Others, including musical concerts and comedy shows, are one-off events, but they have a large and loyal following.

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Elyria is nearly equidistant between Chicago and Buffalo, NY, and either could be a great destination for a getaway trip, But Elyria residents can also easily head to Lake Erie to spend a long weekend on the water, or be in Canada within a couple of hours. Hamilton, Ontario is only a quick flight away and relatively inexpensive. Toronto is not much further!

Where is the best place to move in Elyria?

Because Elyria is not that large, you'll find apartments for rent at varied price points throughout the city, both in older homes and in relatively modern small compounds, some with wooded settings and a rural feel, others that are within walking distance to schools, and still others that have a more urban, contemporary vibe, close to major thoroughfares to keep the commute to Cleveland as short as possible. It all depends on what's important to you. Just know that your options for a desirable life in an Elyria, OH, apartment are wide, and you're almost certain to find an apartment to love.
