Garfield Overview

Garfield is a city of about 30,000 people in Bergen County, NJ, situated at the junction of the Passaic and Saddle Rivers and about a 40-minute drive from Manhattan. Garfield is nicknamed the "City of Champions" because its high school football team, cadets, and drum and bugle corps won championships. Also, Tippy Larkin, "the Garfield Gunner," was the Junior Welterweight Boxing Champion of the World in 1946. The largest industries in the city are retail, health care, and manufacturing. Garfield has an urban, suburban feel.

What is the history of Garfield?

The city was originally the home of the Hackensack Clan of the Leni Lenape Tribe of the Algonquin Indians. In 1679 Jacques Cortelyou from New Utrecht, Long Island, sailed up the Passaic River and bought a 5,320-acre tract called Acqueyquinonke from the Native American tribe. Wild animals inhabited much of the northern part of the tract, and a tax raised money to kill these animals. After that, buyers purchased parcels within the tract. Early in 1776, Gen. George Washington marched troops over the Passaic River just north of today's Gregory Avenue and camped there for the night just before retreating to Pennsylvania and making the famous Christmas crossing of the Delaware River. Gilbert D. Bogart is called the founder of "modern-day" Garfield. He built about 300 homes in areas that became known as East Passaic and Bogart Heights. The city multiplied around the turn of the 20th century and became a thriving industrial center. 

How is the weather in Garfield?

Garfield has four seasons. It is warm and humid in summer and cold and snowy in winter. Temperatures vary over the year from a high of 24 to about 86 degrees. The skies are often cloudy. The best months for outdoor activities are June through late September.

How do I get around town?

Garfield is a very walkable city, and you'll be able to accomplish most errands on foot if you choose. NJ Transit's Bergen County line provides bus, light rail, and rail service at the Garfield and Plauderville stations. Transportation goes to the Hoboken Terminal, where you can transfer to trains going to Manhattan or other parts of New Jersey. Bus service is also available.

What is the Garfield commute like?

The average Garfield resident commutes for about 27 minutes each way. The city has about 50 miles of roadway. Residents can use commuter trains or buses, but most drive their own cars. Major routes are US Route 46 and County Route 507, Midland Avenue, Outwater Lane, River Drive, and Passaic Street. It is also near the Garden State Parkway. If you want to drive to New York City, you might take either US 46E or I-95 to 9A south. Traffic is moderate within Garfield.

What are the local media outlets?

Several local and ethnic newspapers serve Garfield, including the Gazette and Polish News. An online newspaper, the Garfield-Lodi Daily Voice, also covers community news. News 12 is a popular news program. Garfield has 137 FM stations and 78 AM stations, which provide a wide variety of listening options. 

Why live in Garfield, NJ?

You'll like living in Garfield. It has a high livability score and a low cost of living relative to other cities nationally and New Jersey, in particular. The city is generally safe and has great diversity. It offers some great parks and restaurants. It's also a suburb of New York City, you'll live in a quiet city while having access to jobs and entertainment in one of the world's greatest cities.

What Garfield landmarks should I see?

Two historical markers designate Revolutionary War sites in the city. The first one marks where British troops waited, hoping to ford the river in pursuit of Washington but could not cross. That marker is at River Drive and Columbus Avenue. Another marker at the city's YMCA on Outwater Lane is in memory of Lt. Col. Cornelius Van Vorst, a local resident who fought in Washington's army. Nearby are the Dey Mansion, which served as Washington's headquarters, and New Bridge Landing, which served as the site of 11 engagements during the war. 

What is there to do around Garfield?

The city has several parks. One example is Post Ford Park on the north side of the Passaic River. Dahnerts Lake County Park. features recreational activities such as a playground, fishing, and rolling hockey. The city also has a recreation center that sponsors sports teams and other activities. Several taverns, bars, and clubs provide nightlife opportunities. The Wisla Club offers dancing every Friday night. The Hive Bar and Bistro provides food and entertainment. Royal Warsaw, Matthew's Italian Restaurant, Steve's Burgers, and Noches de Columbia are popular restaurants. If you like museums, check out the Montclair Museum of Art, about 20 minutes away. The city is also only 40 minutes away from Manhattan, which provides live theater, nightlife, museums, and other activities.

Any annual festivals or Garfield events to know?

The city has an annual Polish celebration dinner and a Fall Street Festival, both in September. It also has a yearly carnival in May that includes amusement park rides and food. 

Where are the nearby vacation spots?

Living in Garfield, NJ, apartments will put you within a few hours' drive of fantastic vacation spots. New York City provides sightseeing, nightlife, and fine dining. Atlantic City, a resort city on the coast, is only about 100 miles away. Other Atlantic beaches, such as Cape May, NJ, or Lewes, DE, are also within a three-hour drive. Several Pennsylvania attractions, including Philadelphia, Hershey Park, and Hershey Chocolate World, are also within a two to three-hour drive. If you like camping, Bass River State Park in Tuckerton is just 2 1/4 hours away. The park offers hiking and a variety of water sports, such as fishing and swimming.

Where is the best place to move in Garfield?

The city has some beautiful neighborhoods. A few of the best locations for apartments in Garfield are Downtown, East Passaic, Lakeview, and Saddlebrook. Of course, the best community for you depends on what you like. Downtown, with its nightclubs and restaurants, will put you more in the center of the action, for example. Lakeview will have a more suburban feel. In addition to location, you'll want to consider price and amenities when looking for the best apartment. Garfield, NJ, apartments will range from $1,000 to more than $2,000, the most affordable apartments for you will be no more than 30 percent of your gross monthly income, including utilities.
