Garfield is nicknamed the "City of Champions" because its high school football team, cadets, and drum and bugle corps won championships. Also, Tippy Larkin, "the Garfield Gunner," was the Junior Welterweight Boxing Champion of the World in 1946. The largest industries in the city are retail, health care, and manufacturing.
